My taxidermist seems to love them.

Not sure but all mechanicals have a change of failing to open on impact.

Nope.

No mechanical lives up to the hype.

Stick to a quality fixed blade, and eliminate one set of issues from your hunt.

This is an age old question, and you will get opinions from everybody. Depending on your time and budget, you could experiment with different brands and come to your own conclusion.

For instance, Muzzy will get the job done, and my brother swears by them and has taken many deer with them. For me, I've shot them before but just don't like them. Rage, I've shot them before and taken animals but just don't like them. I could go on and on about the dozens of BH's I've tried throughout the years and give you my opinion.

Truthfully, any and all will get the job done, but to do so, the person pulling the string must make it happen. Pick-up the latest Bowhunting magazine, or maybe it was Bowhunter, but nevertheless, there was an article in the current issue on mechanical heads, and the previous was on fixed blade.

Just for information, I'm currently shooting NAP Hellrazors that I got on clearance at Academy this year, 4-pack was $19.99, as well as some Magnus 2-blade, I call them the traditional heads because I'm not sure if they have a model. Opening day, the same Magnus sliced right through two pigs that weighed about 80 pounds a piece, and ended in a short run of less than 30-yards. All I did was sharpen it after the first pig and it was ready for the next job.

Vortex broadheads will still give you a 1 inch cut even if they don't open. They always have opened for me however. The only problem is that they don't give much of an entry, but make up for it with their exit.

Personally, I've been shooting the traditional 3 blade 100gr Muzzys for over 10 years. Never found any reason to change. Never made a "good" shot that didn't end in a kill, and from what I understand the benefits that mechanicals offer won't help on marginal shots.
One other thing I really like, is that the flight of my 100gr practice points and those 100gr Muzzys are almost identical out to 35-40yds.

I started shooting Rockets went to Reaper's, then to Rage and now back to Reapers. I am also shooting the Grim Repaer Hades. Wife took a 200 lb. boar last weekend shooting an 85 gr Hades and pulling 42 lbs. with 600 ST Epic's. Penetrated both sides at 23 yds. HE went 25 yds. and fell. Oh yeah, he was double lunged. That get's them everytime. IT doesn't really matter the broadhead name or type, it is what you can shoot accurately. She has taken deer every year for 4 years now using Stingers and Buzzcuts. Lungs dont seem to stop any of them!!!!!!
