I got a pic of this deer last year...he looked like a fawn with a 8pt rack. We have killed mature deer weighing 200lbs on this lease. I'm just curious what y'all think? He is prob half the body-size of the other bucks.

Good question. I have shot a deer like this in Mills County, Tx. His problem was just shorter legs. He had the body size and weight of 4.5 year old buck just half the leg length. I would get rid of his genetics IMO.

I would assume some form of genetic dwarfism. First thought would be to cull him before he passes along the gene. Second thought would be that he is highly unlikely to pass along any genes unless your doe to buck ratio is way out of whack. Can't imagine any self-respecting doe letting him along for the ride.

We used to have a few deer like this in the Hill Country. They were like midgets or dwarfs and you could tell this when they walked up to the feeder. We started shooting them, bucks and does, and now very seldom see any. Ours also seemed to not lose their summer coats. They were always a redder color than the other deer, especially in the winter when most deers' coats are grey. I used to think maybe we were crazy seeing some of these smaller deer, but maybe not.

My first thought was that he is a really late fawn but now I don't know. Do you have any idea how old he is? I've never seen that. I doubt that the more dominant bucks would let him breed even if he could reach it. I'd keep him around just becaues he's cute and I have a soft spot for the underdog. But then again, I'm not trying to manage a herd for Dino-deer.

I would agree with some sort of genetic dwarfism or something. Although I have never seen it, I would suppose that kind of mutation would occur in nature as much as it does in humans. Many times in humans the gene is not dominant so even if the little guy could get "up" for breeding, it is unlikely he would pass ont he trait, but the genes would be half-likely to pass on and in the chance another half met, it could create another dwarf...

the second pic is from last fall 2011, it's the first pic we have of him, so he is at least 2.5.

Had one coming to my feeder every day last year that looked just like that one. I just thought he was a real young small 8. Gonna have to see if I see him this year and if his size has changed. It was cool to watch him jump into the feeder pens though, being so small he didnt seem to have any struggles getting in or out.

I wouldn't shoot him, if I did I would feel bad afterwards. Think what the lil feller has gone through to get this far.

He's trying to stay cute so no one shoots him.

I've seen this on occasion in S Tx. Even at 5.5, these smaller deer are not close to the normal size 5.5 yr old native deer. We've attributed it to the "experiments" that other ranches have done by introducing non-native genetics.
