I've heard that they are by far the worst insect to get stung/bitten by, so be careful!

I figured by the looks of it you wouldn't want it to sting you.

The tarantula hawk is relatively docile and rarely stings without provocation. However the sting, particularly of Pepsis formosa, is among the most painful of any insect, though the intense pain only lasts for about 3 minutes.[3] Commenting on his own experience, Justin Schmidt described the pain as "immediate, excruciating pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations."[2] In terms of scale, the wasp's sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, second only to that of the bullet ant and is described by Schmidt as "blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric".[4] Because of their extremely large stingers, very few animals are able to eat them; one of the few animals that can is the roadrunner. As many predatory animals avoid these wasps, there are many different insects which are mimics, including various other wasps and bees (Mullerian mimics), as well as moths, flies (e.g., mydas

I had one sting a pointer of mine. Killed him... I think he more than likely had a heart attack from the pain.
One side note, NEVER put an armadillo in a paper feed bag.

Thats a pepsis wasp. I've been stung in the finger by one few years back. Thought the thing was dead and,yes like a genius I picked it up! It was excruciating pain. Screamed and freaked out for a bit it was so shocking. Felt like a hot ice pick was stuck in my thumb. I thought I was going to have to go to the emergency room at first but within an hours the pain started to subside. Those critters lay their eggs on a spider so that when the larvae hatch they have a meal ready for the taking.

I've seen these before, never tried to pick one up, thank goodness.

Where in God's name did you find that?
I've never even heard of them but it sounds like "death from above".

Those things are mean and nothing to mess with but the times I have encountered them I havn't had a problem with them. They are usually on the ground hunting for spiders a lot bigger than they are. They sting their prey to paralyze not kill so their young have something to eat when they hatch.
Not all those that wander are lost..
