I'm a relatively new hunter, and haven't hunted deer yet. I've been wondering, and another thread was just raggin' on antler restrictions, so I figure I'll go ahead and ask - what the heck is the government's goal with antler restrictions? I always figured it would force you to leave genetically inferior bucks with smaller racks...?

Do a search for antler restrictions. Plenty of threads about this with some lengthly arguements. But Im sure someone will step in and say something soon.

TPWD's thought on antler restrictions is that it will buy some of the younger deer more time to grow into more mature deer. Some people shoot anything they see. Including 1.5YO fork horns and other younger deer that deserve a chance to grow and give hunters greater opportunities to harvest them later down the road. That's not to say there isn't exceptions to the rule. But, I think TPWD see's it doing more good than harm.

The premise is to force hunters to stop shooting young deer (namely bucks) and allow them to mature before shooting them. Too many hunters see horn and shoot the deer without ever evaluating the deer's age.

The goal is simple: let the deer have time to mature a little with the result to be bigger bucks for all. I applaud the goal. It has done wonders for hunting in my area.

Others disagree.
