I drive by two areas daily and see the fields completly plowed and no birds.
After paying all that money for a lease are you pissed that these specially planted fields are now just dirt fields?

Thats just a shame!! We dont plow ours under till its over. People pay good money to hunt and IMO as a guide and outfitter you should give them a good place to hunt when they spend good money to do so.

Dove hunting in frisco should be on your 100 things to do list before your die.
Its full of emotions.
From a real high (incld $) followed by a rapid low (birds)

After paying all that money for a lease are you pissed that these specially planted fields are now just dirt fields? If you are speaking of the horse park then everyone was told the plan before it happened and they were not planted just for dove hunting. The real truth is that crops are worth more than the dove hunts. You might also want to understand what is being done before bashing it. As for the cost if you go an hour to an hour an a half away and stay in a hotel for two nights you have spent over $500.00 for a weekend and are done for the year. By the time you factor fuel, time, hotel and food you have probably spent as much or more than if you had joined a season lease in town. Town hunting is not for everyone and disappearing to the country is not for everyone either.

Our lease has been plowed in, but we are still seeing lots of birds. There are educated and you have to work for them though!

What I don't like is all through the summer you see all these posts about how great these places are (not just Frisco) but all kinds of outfitters talking about how theyve planted this or that, the birds are everywhere, etc, etc. but as soon as sept gets here they vanish. Dove season for some of us, is not just about the first day. It's about 2 months of going out and shooting birds. Yes sometimes it's slow, birds come and go, we all know that but the bang never lives up to all the hype and all the money that they are getting.
Hunting is a sport that started with our founding fathers and most of us grew up doing it, but it has gotten so comercialized and expensive that the culture of hunting is not what it used to be. And it is almost embarrassing. I know it's only going to get worse and it makes me sick sometimes.

Im with you bird dog. I hunt in krum as well, and the outfitter just opened one of the 10 fields he has. Never been hunted before. Result was a fun limit. Its called managing your fields. Most outfittes only have 1 or 2 fields, so they are all in right away with tons of hunters. Birds gone after 1 week.
The dayhunt should be 200$ and the seasonlease 250
its all good, texas department of wildlife should have a separate season for frisco, like hunting once a week only.

Town hunting is not for everyone and disappearing to the country is not for everyone either. In that case it should be called a two week lease, not a season lease. Never understood why farmers are so ready to plow their stuff under in September to plant in March

Rambal...here is a brilliant idea why don't you ask one, instead of just making smartarse remarks Harvested corn this week, before the last first grain truck hit the elevator we where already prepping to plant winter wheat next week. You have a finite window to get your grain out before a host of reasons show up and you lose it. Soil prep is the key to a good crop, also the key to retained soil moisture. I know nothing about the horse park other then it always seems to have some bad mojo around and about it every year. I tend to stay away from a fire that never seems to get put out

Farmers dont just plow up fields to be plowing. It is all done as Bobo says to hit windows and timelines. Most of the fields you see being plowed are to drill wheat. There are lots of Milo fields that have not been plowed. They have had moisture on them though and the seeds have germinated and started growing. Frisco is on the Eastern edge of the flyway. Once native birds are blasted your bird count is gonna go way down. There will be migrating birds just not in the densities you see farther West.

What a novel idea bobo, why didn't I think of that? I fail to see where winter wheat planting has anything to do with my statement, unless of course you plant your winter wheat in march... Obviously winter wheat is one thing, but I'll bet if you roll through frisco in 8 weeks, 75% of the plowed fields that people paid good money for a "season lease" will still be unplanted...I'll bet my next paycheck on that Best answer I ever got in Angelo on why they plow so early is "that's just the way we always done it"

They are most likey preparing it to help gather moisture, and eliminate competition from weeds. Also gives the stuble time to break down and add nutrients back in the soil.

That makes sense to me, I just think if they're leasing a place for hunting then they should hold off a little longer on it. I've seen farmers hold off a few weeks before for an outfitter. I compare them plowing 3 weeks in to someone leasing a duck pond out, then draining it down to almost nothing at the split.

The main reason farmers plow their fields so early is to prepare the seed bed for the next planting and also to keep the weeds and other trash out of the field. I think alot of those farmers could careless about the dove hutners using their land, the milo and corn check from the co-op probably pays a little better than jo blows season lease. Just my opinion.
