I can't point you to a Waco gunsmith but I can point you to a chambering.

If you handload:

#1 .260 Rem
#2 6.5 Creedmore
#3 .243 with 1:8 to 8.5 twist and 105+ g.r bullets
#4 7mm-08

If you don't handload:

#1 6.5 Creedmore
#2 .243 and 100gr. bullets
#3 7mm-08

No I didn't put a damn .308 in there. All of those will out perform the .308 at distance and with a cross wind, which is always present.

Oh and when you read that you need a magnum or a super speed 6.5-284 consider barrel life and recoil of those chamberings larger than a short action. The short action chamberings I mentioned will not kick your retinas loose and will have a fairly long barrel life if loaded with reasonable ammo.

You need something you can shoot hundreds of rounds through and work out to longer ranges in increments.

We shot the other day at 1102 yards. Hit a torso size target
pretty easy. Used a 308. The scope made a big difference, over $2000.

243 is just about as harsh on barrels as the 6.5-284. Seems you got the rest of the post pretty well locked up.

Yes, the .243 can be hard on barrels. That's why I mentioned keeping the ammo "reasonable" in reference to speed. A .243 kept at or under 2900 fps will hold up for quite a while, depending on barrel maker of course. It won't have the longest barrel life of all the choices, for sure.

30-06 can do it also. A 223 can if you really want to.

6.5-284 and the 300 wsm hold the 1000 yard records in benchrest.

243 or 6 remington ackley ized is pretty salty.

260 rem or 260 ackley is pretty sweet to!

High bc and 3000 fps and whatever recoil you can handle and a scope that can repeat the same every time you move it..

My long range rig I have $4000+ in and 1/2 is scope cost!

The 06 is a very good comprise in the 30 cal bore when using the 208's. If you are going long action standard bolt face I would look at Tbe 280 or 280AI as it is an awesome performer as well.

If you load your own, go with a fast twist 223. Sending 82 Berger BTHP, pointed, at 2900-ish matches my 260 dope to 1100. If you don't load your own, go 6.5creed or 308.

I just built a 6.5/284. It's awesome!
But, I think any of the 6.5's or the .260 are excellent choices.
I don't reload, but I use Dallasreloads.com (Chad) to do it for me. I am happy with that set up.
Jon Trammel in Breckenridge is a good builder.
Chuck Ross built mine, but he might kind of far from Whacko.
Good luck, shooting "out there" is pure fun!

Anything in the 6.5mm, 7mm, or heavy bullet .308 calibers will work fine. What you need, is a good high BC bullet. Which case that propels this bullet is up to you. The bigger the case, the more recoil and more muzzle blast you will have. It's hard to beat a 6.5mm or 7mm bullet in a 308 Win sized case (like a 260 Rem, 6.5 Creemoor, 7mm-08, etc).

From your posts I would buy an sps tactical with a $300-500 mil dot scope. Preferably vortex, leupold or on the cheaper side Nikon.

If you get so you can shoot better than the rifle then great sell it to get into a better bc rifle. You shouldn't lose any money on it and my guess is 308 will get the job done.

I would build something in a 7mm. It is a flat flying round with great knock down power.

I've been tossing around the idea as well and just can't seem to take my mind off the 7mm stw in a sendero style rifle. I've got 270 and 308's, but it would be nice to have something that can pound steel way out there. I've also been tossing around putting a sightron siii lrmoa scope on whichever I come up with.

You don't need a STW to bang steel way out there. Yes, an STW can do it and di it well. It is one of the hardest recoiling 7mm calibers out there. Most shooters could not shoot this round well. A 7mm-08 with a 162 A-max, 168 or 180 VLD would work very well. A 154 SST would also be a decent choice.

I'm not a long range shooter, but I am a big fan of the 260. Even loaded up to near max with a 120 grain bullet, it doesn't kick as much as my 270, and the 270 is a good bit heavier. And if you want to bang whitetail instead of steel, the 260 has proven to be a very deadly round.

They are also really hard on barrels thanks to that nice overbore it has.

First off, what is your skill level at this point in time? When you get to where you can get tiny groups with a 22lr, then switch to 223....when you get tiny groups farther out, switch to something else.

The 308 may not be en vogue at this point, but match grade ammo can be had cheaper in 308. It will take a LOT of practice in order to get to where you can utilize a gun that is capable of 1k+ yard shots. Get something smaller, and a lot of ammo, and practice until you get good. The 223 or 308 will be cheaper to learn with. Once you are faithful in the small things, move on up to bigger things.

Come to think of it, starting off with a good quality pellet gun in the backyard might also be a good place to start. Look up Peter Hathaway Capstick and his writing about "Mini Sniping"-shooting at a 9mm casing at 30 meters! It is much harder than you would think, and can be done in the backyard!

There are tons of rifles/calibers that are more than capable of making 1000 yard shots. Many of these are off the shelf rifles. You could go many different ways with many different calibers. Some will make you work a little harder than others.
