I'm not good enough to do it, but most of the guys I know, aim for the middle.

Exit wound in pic. Entry was pretty much dead square in the center.

For the ones that neck shoot......where on the neck do you shoot? Near the head...shoulder....middle of neck ? The head moves almost constantly and often unpredictably, and I don't want to waste any (shoulder) meat, so I go for the middle of neck.

That pic looks about right. I shot one last year with a 80grain core loot in .243 last year. Made a nasty hole and he went down right there but I hit too much throat and not enough spine and he kicked around more than I cared to see.

The last two I took were about the same spot as in the pic. The legs just folded. I was using a 30-30 win 150gr HP from 20yds and left an exit the size of a base ball. I was just curious of everyone's shot placement. Seems like I have it right. I may try a little closer to the head to save more meat for the grinder.

Right below the chin. Or anywhere else in the neck it doesn't much matter with a 308.

Typically shoot for the middle of the neck
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

seems like neck shooting is a sore subject around here from previous posts, but truth be told, I only shoot my does in the head or neck. I am not wasting any shoulder meat!

I hit what I'm aiming at Paco. Don't give me any bs, I've never had a deer run away from a neck shot EVER. And that's with guns like 22 hornets and 222s. So before you go jacking your jaws about how it doesn't work get some experience. Why waste shoulder meat? And why watch mr whitetail run away after you shot him? With every neck shot I've taken the deer hit the ground so fast I didn't even see it. Clip one across the the top of the neck, pssssh wake up man.

I clipped one across the neck with a 300 mag a couple years ago. Almost took his head off.. I found meat up in the tree limbs. Gave me a whole new respect for the power of a 300 mag

I've shot plenty of deer in the neck and wouldn't have a problem taking that shot again. However, the only deer I have ever not recovered was a neck shot. I shot a doe right in the middle of her neck at about 50 yards. She jumped ten feet in the air and ran a short distance into the woods and crashed. I was shocked that she even ran. That was the first time I had ever had a neck shot deer not drop in their tracks. I gave her about 20 minutes and then went to recover. There was tons of blood on the ground where I had taken the shot. To my surprise, I jumped her and she took off. The blood had apparently clotted as there was no blood trail from that point. I never found her. I think that speaks more to the resilience of the animal than the shot choice. Deer are just very tough animals. I do keep my neck shots to 100 yards or less eventhough I'm quite comfortable shooting much longer distances.

If you have confidence in your rifle and yourself go for it. If not stick with heart, lung, shoulder shot. To tell the trueth I like head shots on does and pigs, but there are time that I just dont have the confidence in rifle our myself. Usually, it is the morning after a late night around the fire with lots of "refreshments".

I agree. But I shot a a small cull buck with a 222 low shoulder hit and he dropped. It took a few minutes for him to die but he did without moving. The bullet had exploded on the shoulder plate and broke it so he couldn't run and some shrapnel had hit the vitals and he died. I would've take a neck shot but he was behind my feeder leaving and all I could see was his shoulder. But the 100 yard or less thing is legit. The neck shot is by far my favorite if the shot can be made. Otherwise quartered away behind the shoulder, with any gun.

The one that you are most confident with pretty much. Varmint bullets are great, they usually explode, but I've had everything work for me.

So what bullet would someone recommend in .223 for neck shots? I ahve only shot 1 deer with a .223, out of my AR. Neck shot 55gr VMax DRT. Got that out of my system and marked off the kill a deer with your AR column and have never done it again. With that said my father and grandfather would only take neck shots and it was not until I was almost 30 that I shot a deer anywhere else. I would estimate I have shot over 40 deer in the neck and the furthest any went was maybe 10 yards. If I deer hunt with my 6mm I still do it, but I am not as steady as I was when I was younger. Prefer a bigger target.
