Not only do I have to worry about my Nephews' grades but other conflicts occur. Football, soccer, scouts and soon band also come into the mix. Kids and their schedules grin and mad. I would be for the youth hunts to be drawn as early as the alligator hunts. Darn funding issues bang C'mon drawings up

I just called and got picked for GDA. This will be my first time hunting through a drawn hunt. Description says 'assigned blind'.do they just give me directions to a blind and will the othermpeople on my card be nearby?

Thanks

Everyone in your group will get assigned their own blind. They normally will let you pick your blind based on the order your group was drawn. They will give you a map and sometimes they will drop you off and pick you up. I prefer the by compartment hunts, a lot more freedom to hunt how you want and come and go when you want.

On "assigned blinds", they will draw stands. Then, someone in the department will take/pick you up. The other people in your group may be somewhere else. You can always request that yall be close by. Some are really good at working with you. Piece of advise, take a comfortable chair with you. Most of their blinds, if not all now, are some sort of ground blinds. One hunt I went on, they used a 5 gallon bucket for your chair. Best thing to do, is call the area right before your hunt and just find out how they will run the hunt. That's how I knew to bring a chair on that one hunt.

My son has been drawn 3 times there on the youth hunts. The one hunt that he drew a doe/spike only, we got to watch a MASSIVE 10 point walk out in front of us a couple hrs into the hunt.

RE: Mineral Wells SP
Get you a screened shelter at the State Park and they will let you drive in and out the locked back gate to the hunt / maintenace headquaters building.
Bring some chairs to replace the 5 gallon buckets. Their ground blinds were not so good . PVC covered with cheap camo burlap. Might want to bring a pop up if its windy. GL cheers

GDE 10 + 1 = 11

GDA 09 + 1 = 10

GDM 04 + 1 = 05

TEXAS DRAW HUNTS PICKED IN LAST 11 YEARS = 0

TEXAS STANDBY DRAW HUNTS RUNNING 90+%

In the last five years I have made atleast 15 standby hunts and had a great time at each.

I guess the auto system is down? Tried calling a few times including just now and it just rings. The automated system wont pick up. Guess I'll give it another shot on Monday. Congrats to everyone who got drawn!

Try late at night or early in the morning. Even if you get a ring, I think the computer system gets busy with everyone calling in.

Preference Points
? Are you entering the hunts with a single person on the application? Find some buddies or youth to put on drawing and putting there names on entry will increase your odds by 300% if you list all 4 people. Use the same 4 people each year. Make sure they have not already entered in the same category or both partys will be void.

I'm not sure it works like that. Here's a quote from the book.

"In the event multiple individuals choose to apply to hunt as a group, preference point status in the drawing will be assigned to the group application rather than for each individual group member. Group applications will have preference points determined by averaging the points of all group members and rounding the figure down to a whole number. When a group application is not selected, each individual person accrues one preference point."

I was talking with one of the guys who works at Matador. He was saying that a single individual or smaller group has a slightly better chance of being picked. The reason is, they have a certain number of slots to fill. When they get to the end of filling those slots and there are only one or two slots left, if they draw an app that has 4 applicants, they have to throw that one out and keep drawing until they get one with a small enough number to fit the remaining slots.

Good advice for Lake Mineral Wells State Park. My brother and I drew a management hunt there a couple of years back. The blinds they have aren't much and take your own chair. After setting on a bucket the first day, I went to walmart and bough a $5 folding chair.

The staff there was really great when we went and you should see plenty of deer.

I'm getting either a busy signal, or a ring and no answer.

No luck today
