I am moving to the area from Beaumont and looking for a place to hunt. Open to any suggestions...

Depending on the part of DFW you're at, Caddo National Grasslands is probably your closest bet for permit-free hunting. There are many dozen units of land north of Decatur. You can get maps for a few bucks from the ranger's office, or download the data online if you're comfortable with that.

One other public (and free) option is Corp of Engineers land around lakes. Lake Grapevine, Lewisville, and Lavon offer free hunting by permit only on and around their lakes. I believe Grapevine permits are spoken for this year, but Lewisville at least had some last week. Just search the internet for info and phone numbers, or drop by the Corp offices if you are close.

Once you have that, just be sure to follow the published rules. The public lands above have no rifle policies, so you'll probably be using a shotgun for small game.

If you get a permit for Lewisville, PM me and I'd enjoy some company scouting and shooting squirrels. Just got my first of the year this morning and am hungry for more.

Cheers

My book says "General season: Nov 5- Mar 11. All legal firearms, archery and crossbows may be used to take feral hogs during this season." For Caddo National Grasslands.

Thats the unit out near honey grove I believe. You can rifle hunt there.
