I have a Rem 7m08 stainless synthetic 24in Barrel floated and bedded that has a fair amount of muzzle jump to it. are there any suggestions on something i might be able to do to cut down on this a bit.

1- make sure you are behind the gun properly and driving the rifle with good cheek pressure. Next would be to reduce the bullet weight and/or velocity so there is less recoil.

You can also look into a muxxle brake. Even though not needed for the recoil some designs will help control muzzle rise.

There is a recoil pad made by Pachymar I think that is designed to reduce recoil and decrease muzzle rise.

Just me, but I wouldn't put a brake on it.

Do not see the Pachmayr I was thinking of but the Limbsavers pads with the anti muzzle jump work, just do not look as good IMO. But looks fine on the synthetic stock I have one on. Even available in a slip on version would be easy to try. We had one of those on a 30-06 with a steel buttplate and it sure made it a lot more comfortable.

When my Tikka starts loosing accuracy, I will rebarrel in 260 or 7mm-08. It is a 243 Win now and it has 1500-1750 out of it, IMR 4350 40gr over 100gr Sierra/Hornady BTSP and IMR 4064 with Sierra 80gr BTSP. There was some Sierra 85gr BTHP, just not that many.

Add the 120 Nosler Ballistic Tip and Speer 130 BTSP to this very short list.

the 120 gr TSX or TTSX i am guessing that is a reload?do they have factory loads as such.i do not reload is why i am asking. the only 120 gr i have seen in factory is REM 120 hollow point. Guys i really thank you for the input the o8 is new to me. i have shot a 7 Mag for years and will continue. this caliber is something i wanted to try just trying to get the best performance out of it.

Federal and Barnes both offer factory loads with the TSX.

Only deer I have ever lost was with a Ballistic tip, you can have them. Hit lower inside shoulder and instead of pucnhing through went striaght up. He is still alive though and has a cool scar. Hopefully I will get him this year, to settle the score. Won't reload BTs again for deer.

I've used Ballistic tips on the last 8-10 deer shot. I will say they don't go through, but have a massive impact, especially on neck shots. Deer don't move!

Get a 243 with XP3 and be done with it. Anything else is a waste of caliber for any North American Game.

This makes my 30th year with the 7mm-08. All thst time it has seen several different loads, all of which used 139 to 145gr bullet offerings. Nosler Ballistic Tip, Partition, Accubond, Speet 145gr boattail, Hornady SP and SST. Favorite bullets are the Partition and Accbond. But with the 7mm-08 I am probally jinxing myself, only one deer has not died within sight and that one was my fault. Easy recovery but did have to trail her a little ways with a massive blood trail.

This statement was wrong a few months ago and nothing has changed .243 and "magic bullets" do not make it better than everything else. You were shown facts and blindly choose to disbelieve them, don't spout your BS as fact when it is not. Is the .243 capable of taking game yes it is but it is no better than any other caliber above it's bore diameter.

Thats your opinion.

Fact is every animal I've killed from 2 lbs to 2600 lbs has dropped with one shot. I own or have owned and killed game with about everything they make all over this planet. I also didn't say it was better, I said others are a waste. The fact of my matter is the 243 kills much better than several calibers I've used with a larger bore.

But, If you just ain't that good, I guess its a fact in your world.

Your Indian name could be "Biggunlittlespear" funny man. laugh

The 7.08 is fine fer shol but I've never herd of anyone having a muzzle jump problem from one until now.

Your statement is all opinion related no facts support your statements besides that you have killed animals with it. You come into someone else's post using your opinion to say it is crap and the 243 is better, when facts dictate otherwise. I have never lost an animal with 30-06 and yet I do not claim it to be the best in the world as you do the 243. Size of the animal has no bearing in this conversation since slaughter houses for years used the 22lr to take care of the nasty business. Does that make it the best? Any caliber should work as long as a proper bullet is used and shot placement is proper in relative to the game being taken.

Just a question. What 2600lb animal did you kill with one shot using a .243.

LittleD, since you do not have an issue with muzzle jump with the 7mag I would suspect gun fit to you. Stock design can make a lot of difference in not only accuracy but in felt recoil and how the recoil is transferred to the shooter. There have been some things developed that specifically reduce muzzle rise.

Limbsavers recoil pad that is not only designed to reduce felt recoil but direct it in to the shoulder in a way that reduced muzzle rise would be the cheapest to try.

Muzzle break reduces recoil and if the ports are on the top more so than the bottom uses the gasses to "push" the muzzle down reducing muzzle rise. Magna-port has made lots cutting the break into the barrel at angles to reduce muzzle rise. It definitely works in reducing felt recoil and muzzle rise but at the cost of increased muzzle blast.

Stock fit to shooter and action is IMO the most likely cause of muzzle rise. Determining what is right for the shooter is something most often looked at in shotguns than rifles. I think the first 2 would not be needed if the stock fits well but are ways to compensate for the stock and reduce how recoil is transferred to the shooter.

Good luck figuring it out. By the way good response to the hijack of your post.
