Hey guys, I am new to bowfishing. I did a little bowhunting when I was younger, but in no way an expert. I am just looking for any tips you guys have before going out and getting started.
I bought a new Browning Barracuda bow, with a AMS reel and wave rest. One of the things I have a question about is how do you set your rest for correct alignment?
Also what kind of draw device or do you use rollers on the string?
Any help ir tips will be greatly appreciated.

What he said ^^ aim real low, then aim a little lower. don't worry about the rest, you aren't really shooting far enough for it to really mess with you. I made a rest out of 5 minute epoxy, and it worked better than any of the store bought ones. I bowfished for about 8 years, and used to go about 3 days a week, during the warm weather. The no gloves is the best thing I found.

Is no glove a brand or you use no gloves? My girly fingers got tore up fast, havent shot fingers in a while. After the bow blew up and we borrowed Seths bow I was shooting with a release and did better with it.

OK I have seen those. I dont have my own bow yet but maybe in the future. Besides the bows they make for fishing, have you used any regular compounds? Im thinking about getting a used youth and building it up isteade of the others, what is your opinion?

All of my bows were used youth bows. My friend spent 500 on his special bowfishing bow, and I would smoke him every night. I didn't like more than about 35 lbs on the bow, I shot gar that went over 75 lbs with 35lbs draw and got them in the boat. I found that over that it would stick in the mud and was hard to pull out. We used to shoot reds, drum, sheephead, gar, flounder, and an ocasional speck. Just go to a pawn shop and find a cheap bow with your draw length.

I got the no gloves put on last night. How did you blow up the barracuda bow? That worries me.

It didn't blow up, I am also not sure what the name brand was. It had the pulleys down low, and the libs were kind of like a long bow. If I explained that right. I just found that I could shoot a regular bow better.

it was my bow brother in law blew up. he was in full draw and boom the bow went to pieces, pretty scary. one of the little C clips that hold the string on came off. i took it back to academy and got a new one. i am having a string loop put on to shoot a release, with as many shots as we get your fingers will be raw. you could always wear some good gloves, which i recommend. the ams slide system is a must too: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...requestid=48224
also take at least 3-4 spare arrows with you.

I will probably get a youth, my normal draw length is 30 which is a far in a boat; especially since ill be intinct shooting anyway. It is some fun stuff can wait to do it again.

Thanks for all the great advice. I also put the arrow slide on the arrows I bought. Does anyone use a sight pin at all, or just instinct shoot?
I put the rollers on, and was planning using some of those "mechanix" gloves that fit tight on your hand. But I am now thinking about hte release thing now, I thought it would not work because of all the snap shooting that is done while bowfishing. Didnt seem practical.

Ive only been once, but I was a long way from snap shooting. I would try fingers first to see what you like. I dont think you need a site pin, after a few hours your hit ratio will increase tremendously. The biggest problem I had was keep the arrow on the roller, I probably lost opportunity on 20 shots because I couldnt keep the arrow on the roller worth a crap, probably just me.

I have been 4 times total now. I did not shoot anything my first 2 outings but I have the hang of it now. My 1st fish was a lake record buff. I went out last Friday and shot about 10 fish. I amazed my self with a couple of shots that I know I could not make again. One of my buddies that went was a shark. He couldnt miss. I learned a thing or two from him which helped me shoot more fish. If any of you are ever around Belton, pm me and we can get together and launch an arrow or two at a few fish!

No pins, just practice with instinctive. If you have some water near you, you can paint a 2 liter bottle, and sink it and practice shooting it at different distances and depths. I would hit about 3 out of 5 fish I shot at. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. I didn't like the roller rest, I think they make a whisker biscuit for bowfishing, and that would probably be nice. The normal whisker biscuits don't work, because they aren't designed to hold up the heavy bowfishing arrows.

Well tried out the new bowfishing rig this weekend, took several shots to get myself dialed in (about 20). Shot 6 mullet in rice canal in the middle of the day. Gonna use them for catfish bait. I may change to shooting a release, the rollers work good, but my fingers sure hurt by the end of the day.

We went friday and shot with a release. I like it 10 times better. The only proble is the release gets in the way a little but not that bad.
