I just got an old Winchester 94 on a steal! Problem is, the rear sight is busted. I'm trying to replace it but can't get the old one off of there. They say that the sight dovetails on and to just simply drift it from left to right. I have no idea what that means... Any advice?

This may help....

Look on pages 22 & 23! You can see him using a flat ended drift to move the rear sight.....

Thanks! I got it removed, but now the new doesn't want to go in. I keep trying to get it in, but I think it's bending those really fine points on the barrel.

Put a piece of sand paper (finer the better) on top of a piece of glass to make sure it perfectly flat and LIGHTLY bevel(round) the corvers of the sight that you will be inserting first...... VERY VERY LIGHTLY! just enough to remove the finish on the first milimeter or so.

Then lube it with an oil that will dry out, Remoil works well.

Then GENTLY tap it in

a small metal file works fine also. always file the sight, not the barrel!

the sights are always manufactured slightly oversize, to accommodate the tolerances among all rifles from that production. they're all typically a "gunsmith fit" but can easily be done yourself with a little patience.
