It's a very good round for just about anything in the Northern hemisphere.

I have both 444 and 44 mags. Depending on the weight of the round you plan to launch, many 44 mag rounds are real close to the same velocity. I'll admit my 44mag kills as well as my 444. You can't go wrong with it though.

444 Marlin is a great caliber. I have hunted with one quite a bit in the past. I shot a doe with one in 2001. She rolled over as she hit the ground and it looked like a water hose gushing blood at both the entry and exit as I watched her die. One of the most gruesome deaths I have ever seen.
If you put that bullet in the vitals its lights out for the victim. Heck the entry wound is dang near as big as most exit wounds with other calibers.

The 444 is a totally different cartridge than the 44 mag but they do take the same size bullet
The 445 super mag is a really long 44 mag

The newer Marlin 444 does have potential depending upon its rifling and velocity you are seeking. It weren't until 1999 that Marlin produced a Ballard 1 in 20" twist.
I would never rate the older Marlin 1 in 38" 444's any better than the 44 mag. I rate one as a 150 yard gun and the other 200.
