Well, yesterday I posted in regards to ideas for a good dad/son project I could work on with my 2 young sons. Original post here- http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/u..._th#Post3561047Anyways, I ended up getting home pretty late yesterday, so we ran out of daylight working on it, but big things start with small beginnings. We got the frame put together pretty easy, but I still need to pick up a few more peices and want to add a slanted roof, and still thinking about cutting it down, but not sure. Right now each piece of PVC pipe is 5 feet, so its 5x5x5. We ended up using a painters dropcloth for our outside covering, and let my 2 boys go crazy with the brown and green spray paint, then I went in with the black doing the leaves and detail to fill out the camo. We still have a couple of more dropcloths to get painted but they are loving it. We were only able to work on it for a couple of hours, but they are having a blast working on it. I will keep updating this thread with new pics until we get it all finished up. Just hoping the final product comes out looking as good as I have pictured in my head.

Well, got home today and started working on it again... Here are some updated pics. I ended up buying some 12'x5' 3-D camo covering at Academy for the outside, and gonna use the dropscloths painted camo as for the roof, after its covered in scotchguard of course. Anyways, started the boys off with some painting, laying down the base for the camo on the dropcloth. Of course we are still working on getting the measurements right for the roof support. Its hard when you have a 4 year old measuring and a 7 year old cutting, but we are getting there. Of course, you gotta take some time to be jokers once in while, and my boys are no different than dad. Its coming along nicely tho. Still trying to decide on how the best way to hold the coverings in place would be, and need to lower the roof support a bit, but overall looking good. I will update again once we make some more progress. I probably could have ended up buying a decent pop-up for the money I have I have invested in this project so far, but would not want my money back, as this has been very fun to do with my kids. I would suggest all dads give it a go. BTW, if anyone has any good ideas as to what would be the best way to secure the coverings in place, I would love to hear them. Right now we are using large clips to hold it, and its working pretty good, but I was thinking maybe something more permanent. Anyways, more updates as we get it worked on. BTW, I love that "DOG". His name is Maynard. I use him to test my pig pipes, pig bait concoctions on. Dang thing eats more than my kids do tho.

Looks great! How about zip ties to hold the coverings in place?

That thing looks GREAT...should last a lot longer than the cheap pop-ups. I've never had one last very long myself.

Great project! It might be more trouble than you want to go to, but you could put snaps (similar to snaps on clothes) on the material, wrap it around the frame and snap it back to itself. Zippers are even better, but those are A LOT of work to install. Velcro would probably be the easiest. Glue one part to the frame and the other part of the velcro to the material.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Velcro Tape should do the trick. It holds up pretty good. Got at home depot. Your boys look like they're having fun.

I think we have it figured out as to how to secure it. We are going to try some velcro, and see how that works. I am going to have my wife pull out the sewing machine, and actually sew the velcro in place. Also, came up with an idea to stake it down in place. I bought some eye hooks with threads, drilling some holes into the pipe at the base, and then we can run the stakes thru them and hammer them in place. Should work perfect.
This thing is ULTRA LIGHT, and can be taken down and put back up in less than 5 minutes. Heck, my 7 year old could lug this thing around. Just can't wait until its all finished. Wanna show off the final product.

I would go to Hancocks or any fabric store and get some fabric glue. Glue Velcro on the fabric and super glue Velcro to the frame. Simple and it works. Great project for the boys!

You could add some Tees in the middle of your uprights and run a piece of pipe across if you need any extra sturdiness even. Good looking frame and really good idea. If it's not glued, it will make it easy to haul and store too.
