I have a friend that I'm helping out...basically, I get to play with his money! He is wanting a very accurate long range AR-10 or LR 308 (for all you purists). He is wanting a billet upper and lower, but the upper needs to be side charging. Ideas? Next, barrel. Any ideas there? I was thinkging Kreiger in 22"...but open to suggestions. Any thoughts on the the Troy TRX 308 handguards? Just trying to put something together for him...and he can write the checks.

Pick a different caliber for true long range work.

1000 yards with a 308 is more than possible.

1000 yards with a 308 is more than possible. Never said it wasn't, but you need to shoot the 175's or run 155's fast for the best results. The 6.5 Creedmore is all around a better cartridge in the AR 10 platform since the bullet doesn't use up so much case capacity and hinder the round. If one is gonna spend the coin on a billit upper lower combo they may as well pick a round that suits it better.

I don't understand. He wants a gun that will shoot long range but doesn't know what kind of gun will get the job done? There's a LOT of different variables that go into shooting at really long distances. Generally folks that know how to do it also know what kind of gun will get it done.

He currently has a custom 300 RUM and shoots 1000yds all day long. He wants to run 308 so if the need ever arises, ammo is easy to come by. This is more of an "u did it" but probably will end up in the safe most of the time. He is very familiar with bolt action stuff and custom calibers...this was supposed to be an "easy build." After this, he might end up with a 416 Barrett or 50 bmg...but that's a ways out.
Soooo...forget caliber and let's say the 308 platform. Lol

larue OBR and you wont have to build anything. the wait time to get one is pretty bad right now due to high demand.

Just get an Armalite AR10 (T), you will spend thousands less and shoot just as good as most the others, and it will weigh 8.5 pounds.

I love the LWRC REPR. Put many pigs down. But if I were to do it all over again, I'd would have saved the money and went with an Armalite, or LMT and bought more ammo.

The right hand side charging setups with the charge handle in the bolt is a pain when you go to disassemble. you want something like the REPR above.

the repr is an amazing rifle no doubt about it but expensive, I'm still on the fence with the side charging handles.

I'm going with him soon to talk to RPG and see what he can do...The REPR is a very cool gun though.
