What is the difference in the two? If the multi cal can function with such a wide range of uppers, why not the 308? Why does the 308 have to be AR 10 lower?

I thought a 50 beowolf could fit on a multi cal which would require a larger mag well than a 308, right?

It's the LENGTH of the magazine and the extra distance the AR10 has to cycle the bolt to load longer ammo.

A multi caliber AR15 lower will shoot multiple calibers of bullets but they are limited in length by the magazine.

Put an AR10 receiver and an AR15 receiver side by side and the difference is VERY obvious.

Nope the Beowulf fits a standard M4 or AR15 lower. Also I see several posts in this thread refering to Long action. While the AR10 is longer and larger than the AR15 the AR10 is chambered for what are considered short action calibers when talking other gun types ie bolt or lever. The AR10 is designed around the 7.62 Nato (308 Winchester) cartridge and can be found with barrels for some of the other 308 family of cartridges that share the same case but different bullet diameters like 243, 260, 7mm-08, 308 and 338 Federal plus some others of the same overall legnth.

The AR-10s are also built to handle significantly higher pressures. AR-10s weigh about 2-3 lbs more on average. My unloaded AR-10 is was advertised at 11 lbs. Add a scope and a full mag and it is suited for bench shooting and blind hunting. When I bought mine I thought I would get a .243 for my kid to hunt with but it is too heavy for her.

just to add on, the beowulf works just fine on the multi-cal lowers, that's what mine is on. standard mags work just fine also. the ammo fits just fine in a magpul or metal magazine also, i tend to use the metal magazines though

First one down, many many more to come!

556 is loaded to higher PSI than 308 or 243, the larger cartridges do have more square inches though because they are bigger. The AR10 is physically bigger to function with a bigger cartridge, not neceaaarly higher pressure
