I took a evening course on knife smithing. we started out with a chunk of coil spring out of a car & forged it out flat in the shape we wanted , filed & sanded it down by hand then hardened it & put on handles. cool hobby. Got a forge & anvil set up now...gonna start working on making damascus blades. need more hours in a day!

Jantz supply in Davis Ok. Great catalogue they will send. Great to deal with. You will need drill press, grinder ofr buffing wheels, lots of patience.. you can buy production blades and build out handles to get started.. I have been buiding like this of r3-4 years and love the therapy of it. If you want some ideas, contact me and I will send you pics of some I have.

Where do you live? I know a guy that does some knife making, and has been making them for many years. He lives northeast of Rockwall.

buy a knife blank and put your own handles on them.. or buy a kit to get started.. I did all my research online and now I become better at it to sell some...I started out using used butcher blades that I cleaned up and reworked then put my own handle materials on them... like this Good luck!

Adam. Those kits are ok. They will come with minimal instructions though. Knifemaking is done in steps. It's takes a few to get it right. once you finish that kit, you might want to get a good piece of steel and make you a good one.
It will depend on method you want to use to make it. You can Grind or forge. For your first one, you can use nothing more but a set of files and sand paper. That's how I started out. I then built me a forge and built a 1 x 42 grinder. I use carbon steel. 10xx steels mostly and sometimes 5160.
PM me and I will send you several ideas to get you started. Good luck.
back when we used to eat housecats we marinated them in louisiana hot sauce and soy sauce then season them with lemon pepper........then onto the grill slow cooking them 3 hours........excellent folded in tortillas and pico de gallo----Newgulf
