My dog is 2. I know that with the right training, he would make an excellent bird dog. Poor thing hunts every bird, squirrel, and wasp in my back yard.
When is it too late? If not, how much more time do I have??
Thanks

BINGO!! Everything come natural to pointing dogs. You can't train much, except teaching them to hold point. That's what I call the breaking process. It's not too late, but I'd get some birds and start the breaking process this fall.

never too late. I got my first Shorthair when he was two....never hunted, and had some horrible manners. He was Birdey and turned out to be an awesome dog with a great natural ability. I lost him last month. hopefully i will add another one to my pound very soon.

Like these guys already said, it's not too late. But get a move on! The season right around the corner and nothin makes a good bird dog like wild birds!

I have a 4 Y.O. GSP in training now, he's doing great. He even had to overcome gun shyness.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

You decided on a method? I'm a big fan of the perfect start/perfect finish from perfection kennels.... also heard Delmar smith's boys have a good silent command system

I use Delmar Smith's system, and substitute the e-collar for the bump under the chin. It takes less than a month with most pups. Here you go;

i read the delmar method. Its a great method and i took alot from it. He was in my opinion one of the better bird dog trainers....and to do all of that with a paralyzed leg it really says something about his character.

Look in to the Bill West and Bill Gibbons seminar. I am in the process of training my 11month GSP using this method. Not too many gadgets involved and straight forward.

Larry Mueller has some good books on training and his book Speed Train your own Bird Dog even has a section on what you can do if you miss the puppy period
