My lab has realized he can jump my fence ( 5 1/2 ft wooden pickets) and I need to get a temporary solution figured out ASAP. Anyone have any suggestions that are cost effective and don't take forever. I thought about a hot wire (not
Sure how difficult that is to install) or adding boards on the inside to stick up
Higher. Building him a small kennel is a last resort.

You married? Just put the wife outside with him; they seem to be able to keep us men on a short leash all the time....

Get a collar from triptronics. Once that boy is in mid-air, bust him with a lite tickle...

You can put a wire up or get you a Petsafe in ground fence for what a good fence charger will cost. Put the wire around about 3 feet inside your fence, depending on the size of your yard. Put the collar on him and the flags over the in ground fence, you can eventually remove the flags. He will get a warning when he approaches the fence and a static correction until he is back inside the wire. You can get away with the smallest one. There is also a radio fence that will keep the dog within a set distance, they are more expensive than the in ground.

We have an e collar for training that we use frequently. He doesn't try to jump though until he's outside for hours and gets really bored. His pain tolerance is incredibly high so I am gonna try a pretty hot fence charger. He doesn't even yelp with his e collar until its turned all the way up. What level should I place the jot
Wire at ? Nose height or close to the top of
The fence ?

If you use a shock collar, turn it up high and when he goes to jump, light him up long enough so that he gets the point. If you use a hot wire you might try is low at first so that when he gets close to the fence he will get bit and will want to stay away. If you put it at the top, he might go over so fast that he doesn't feel anything. These are some things I have had experience with in the past.

I used a solar charger on my hotwire set-up. It sits on a T post, with one wire grounded to a rod and the other wire going all the way around the fence. My dogs stand two feet away from my fence even when it's off now.

I had a lab, best dog ever and very smart but stubborn about doing the same thing and I used the e-collar, invisible / underground fence, and flags - the whole set-up....It worked for awhile, then it became obvious that he too had a very high pain tolerance, or he was thinking the perceived reward was worth the pain. I even had to add an inner "ring" inside the existing e-fence to increase the distance to about 7-8 ft inside the fence. This was not an outside, cooped up, anxious or bored dog, he was worked almost everyday, but he would do it within 10-20 mins of going out back. The shock collar worked until he figured if couldnt sense anyone around, then there was nobody to press the "naughty" button. The eventual solution was a concealed hot wire about 3/4 up the fence - he only tried it twice after that

If your dogs as stuborn as mine your in for a battle.
My britt takes a jolt and turns around and looks at me like im the dumb one an does it again we have gone round an round. If you dog is jumping the fence you will have to run 2 wires high for a hot wire reson being ones hot and ones grounded he would have to touch both to even get a shock. They work great for digging dogs but can be a pain higher on the fence

I got a beagle, and I dont think you guys know what stuborn is till you have messed with one!

For the first 6 months I had her you had to drag her on a leash. Once she bit me, I popped her on the but and she growled and bit me again, I picked her up by the scruf and said no and spanked her again and she bit me again... stuborn most hard headed and tuff azzed dog I have ever owned! Thankfully we are through those stages and she is a sweet pup now.

bummer. Bad way to lose a dog. Considering drunk drivers these days, at least it was ONLY a dog you lost.

I bought an anti-jump harness for my lab, he tried once with it on and...well he hasn't tried again even with out it.

no dogs were harmed in the above mentioned incident, I myself got a bruised elbow after falling out of a lawn chair laughing at him.

I had the same problem with one of mine. The collars do not work if you have to watch them. You can not be there all the time and they will eventually figure that out. I did the hot wire on the top of the kennel and that has worked like a charm. I dont even have it hooked up any more but he does not know it. Wont come close to it.
