I just recently moved to Lubbock TX for work, and hoping I can stay here awhile as it looks promising. I'm hoping as well to move my family down here in the not so distant future but have to sell the house in Colorado first. I have several questions for the guys that live around Lubbock, and for everyone that hunts and shoots in TX.

1. Where can a guy go around here to shoot his rifles? When I get completly moved down her I have several hunting rifles and was recently bit by the long range bug and have built a rifle to attempt hitting varmints and steel out to 1000 yards. I was informed the Slayton rifle range closed down and there aren't a whole lot of options close to Lubbock. I'm looking for something not more than 1.5 hr drive from Lubbock for a rifle range that goes out to at least 200 yards, would like to find one that I could stretch the legs on as well.

2. I have a soon to be 10 year old daughter that is showing an intrest in hunting. I started her on rimfire rifles four years ago, moved her into a .223 about two years ago, and recently she has been schooling me on shooting a rimfire pistol (Sig Sauer Mosquito) at 10 yards. What kind of shooting/hunting opportunities is there for her here in TX? Other than 4H is there any other youth shooting programs in the Lubbock area? I was going to put her through the Junior Olympic Shooting program in Colorado Springs where we are moving from this year, but having to leave CO instead of being furloghed put a damper on that idea.

She just passed her Hunters Ed course in Colorado, and I have her scheduled for her first WT deer hunt in Stillwater OK at a friends property in November. If she likes hunting I'd like to find her more opportunities to hunt something and I'm thinking mainly pigs and possibly some exotics.

3. I have no idea on leases how they work and how to find one that I can take her, plus I'd hate to pay for a lease that didn't have at least pigs on it for her to hunt. So if you are a leasee, what are some of the things expected of you from the land owner? What does a typical leas cost and what are the limitations on your average lease? I just kind of figure spengind some money on a lease will probably be cheaper in the long run than taking her on a few guided hunts, plus I'll get to spend more time with her in the long run if she really is interested in hunting.

Any help on any of this or tell me something I'm not thinking about would be great.

Thanks!

Not familiar with Lubbock, but welcome to Texas.

For an oppertunity of Hunting for your Daughter checkout he Texas Youth Hunting Program. http://texasyouthhunting.com/
It is open to youth ages 9 to 17 and signup is online. She already has the Hunters Edcuation from CO so is good to go on that, just makesure she has her card. Once she is a resident then resident license apply, but I believe youth license cost is the same for youth if not a resident. Sorry not the same for adults

Go here and search. It seems to show several within 60 miles of you. http://wheretoshoot.org/Find_Range/wts_subresults.asp

Good luck, hope you find one.

Thanks for the links guys I'll check them out. I had checked the "where to shoot" link before, just hoping to find some people with firsthand knowledge on the local ranges.

I would be willing to bet that there are lots of opportunities at prairie dog hunts around Lubbock. I would also think that one could get into some whitetails, mulies, pronghorn and other stuff around there.

One hunt I keep wanting to do out close to Lubboc is sandhill Cranes, Ribeye of the sky hunting can be pretty good.

I'm just a little lost or maybe overwhelmed about where to start with my homework, you guys down here need to put out a "TX hunting lease for Dummies" book to help me get started. I found the number to the local TP&W office and I figre I need to go pay them a visit.

I know it is a little late to get on a lease for this year but I figure I can get a jump start on next. Besides I figure a lot of the best leases come by word of mouth or getting invited onto and not what is advertised in the papers or on the web.

welcome Be careful what you wish for in the HOG hunting. I've hunted the AHP land in that area for pheasant and had a good time.

Unfortunately, the only public gun range was recently purchased by a private individual. Someone should open another one soon.... I hope

Yes, welcome to Texas. I moved here from Louisiana years ago and almost immediately found myself to be taller, smarter, and better looking. And I got a truck and a chainsaw. But seriously, I see your postings on another forum and have found you to be a straight up thinker and very knowledgable. It pleases me to have you become a Texan also. If Lubbock wasn't so far away, I'd invite you over to shoot pigs and have a some BBQ (and a beverage of your choosing).

Like my favorite bumper sticker says, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could". Crockett could have said it. Bowie could have said it.

Just do me a favor and don't go back and look at some of my original posts! blush Lets say I've matured a lot since I first started posting over on TFL. Thanks for the compliment, and maybe someday when I've got the family here and settled we can meet up sometime for that beverage of choice at the least.

TX has been an adventure so far and I almost have a full month under my belt here. I like it but to be honest I'm really going to miss hunting Colorado. However, there are more seasons I can hunt and they are longer down here so I'm sure it will all be great. If I can get on a place with an opportunity to take varmints and pigs as well as get my daughter some great memories with her ol' Dad hunting deer all will be golden.

The guys all seemed to have welcomed you, but not answered much
of your questions..I don't know much about Lubbock...but you may
try getting you daughter into a 4H shooting program and there you
could develope some leads..you may even find a private rancher with some varmits and an area you could use to tune your rifle
up in..We have 4H Programs in Bandera and they save the parents
a lot of time and money and the instructor " Woody" is a really
nice guy I used to shoot Skeet w/ yrs. past when he lived in Hoston and would come up here to compete...and if you do this
your daughter will get to meet a lot of kids her own age..DD

I would try and hit up some local shops, make finds with some of the guys at the local DU club, lots to hunt up that way, it will just take some time understanding how things work in your area, good luck and welcome to Texas

Yeah I've been thinking 4-H as well, just haven't had the time to check out the local clubs yet. I did 10 years in 4-H and it is a great organization.
