You can use live hogs to train your dog. Just don't be dumb about it. And for the love of GOD, don't post graphic videos on youtube. It gives responsible hog hunters a bad name.

This. +1.
There are quite enough people on TV and youtube making hunters look bad enough.
I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

Technically Bennet is correct. You can not, or are not supposed to, use one animal to "fight" another. Even if it's in a cage, even if it's for training, even if you have an uncle, brother, cousin, grandad thats been doing it for years.
Best thing to do is not ask anymore questions in an open forum.
I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

This has got to be one of the worst threads I've seen on this forum... I am an avid hunter who despises the hogs that destroy my feeders and property, but find the idea of putting a hog and a dog in a cage together repulsive. I will not elaborate on my personal feelings, but I will touch on the legalities of the issue:
1) Texas penal code regarding 'Animal Cruelty' applies to any 'domestic animal or any wild animal previously captured'. The law does not differentiate between wild animals and wild animals that are pests or destructive (ie. hogs)
2) Cruelty is defined in a number of ways, including 'causing an animal to fight with another.' Any judge or jury would consider placing a hog and a dog in a cage or trap to fall under this rule.
You can look further into the Texas Penal Code and find other areas that cover these circumstances.

No its not the worst thread. The man asked a simple question and y'all have blown it way out of whack. Its a wonder anybody even stays a member of this forum do to the rude people that need to realise y'all arnt perfect. If a man wants to train a dog to hunt an animal more than likely they have to introduce that dog to a live animal. So a retrieving dog shouldn't bite and carry Back a wounded bird? Most of the people that want to tell the man he is wrong has never lived outside the city limits. People have trained dogs forever using the animal they want to hunt as a tool. We might as well just put on pink panties and make this the Texas cheerleading forum. Man up!!!!!!! The question was, "is it legal". The answer is No. Despite what "the game warden" says, despite the fact that "people have trained dogs forever using the animal they want to hunt as a tool" (I believe I already covered that) and despite what you personally feel, doing what was described, as the question was asked, is not legal. The gentleman posted the actual law and if the wrong game warden found out about it, or if it were put on youtube etc, you CAN get into serious trouble for animal cruelty. This isn't the 1950s. What your uncles and grandfather did doesnt matter anymore. I am not a tree/bunny hugger. My truck has more dead animals in the back of it than a slaughter house but the law is the law.
I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

*Sigh* It is legal to use hounds and dogs etc to HUNT animals like hogs and coons, etc. Perfectly legal.
That wasn't the question though. I'll speak slowly and use small words. The question was, "is it legal to put them in a cage"
You can not, by law, put two animals in a cage with the express purpose of having them fight. It has NOTHING do do with hunting with hounds/dogs. It has EVERYTHING to do with the "putting them in a cage" part.
Also, WTF does Obama have to do with it? Also, learn to read. Also, learn to type/spell and a short course on grammar wouldn't kill you either.
I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.
