A couple of nights ago I was out in my shop loading some 12 ga. ammo for dove season and decided to use several different types/brands of hulls. While yanking the handle on my old Pacific DL-105, it hit me that every different type of hull has it's own little quirks to it. Here's what I came up with:

Win. AA's (grey) load and resize really nice but the tops tend to uncrimp themselves after sitting.

Rem. STS's resize pretty easy but the flash hole is really small and the hull has to be forcibly pulled off of the decapping pin.

Rem Nitro 27's are similar to the STS's, plus they tend to want to collapse near the base when crimping, plus they try to unfold like the AA's.

Rem. Gun Clubs size ok but have a very small flash hole, didn't think I was going to get a few off of the pin.

Fiocchi purple's are a biotch to resize! They brass is either really thick or extremely hard, but the flash holes are better than the Rem's.

Of all of the hulls that I've loaded over the years, it seems like the old red Win. AA's, the cheap promo Win.'s(yes, I reload them and no, they aren't brass), and the cheap Rem. Express hulls are the easiest to resize and most hassle-free.

Anyone else ever notice this? I guess I'm going to either turn my decapper down a few thousandths or just stick with cheap hulls.

Old age ain't for sissies!

I always loaded on MEC loaders and usually ran one brand of wad and one brand of hull at a time. Some have different capacities and when you crimp them, that's when I had problems.

I loaded Remington Peters blue magic, gold, silver and AA hulls. I also loaded Active hulls in 20ga with Active wads and had great success with them skeet shooting.

I did adjust my presses accordingly to hull type.
Good luck to ya.

For my machine, anything remington, federal, or AA loads and crimps the same, even the cheap ones. Any of the lesser winchesters that I wish I could use b/c there are so many of them cause problems. I'm sure I could adjust my machine, but since I have so many others there is not much of a reason... I have so many Fed and Rems that I don't worry about it.

Is there anything different between the white and blue Federal hulls from the red ones? I just picked up a batch this week at the range and figured I'd double check that they are the same before I start working with them.

I stick pretty much with red AAs, tried Remingtons and like you didnot like the smaller flash holes.

Main thing is make sure if swithcing hulls to check the loads some will call for different components and or different powder charges.

I use MEC's and load nothing but Remington hulls for 12 ga. They all seem to deprime, resize and crimp very similar. Have a bunch of Nitro 27's, they seem to be my faves with zero issues thus far. The ones I don't much care for are the Gun Club 6 folds, but they all seem to shoot about the same with comparable loads. I've tried Winchester hulls and I do NOT like the way they crimp, they seem to have a weird plastic matrix or something, as they just don't seem to crimp as well as the Remmy's for me.
