Went to Placencia Belize for the honeymoon. The weather was great, party cloudy and sunny days, thunderstorms at night to cool things off. Beach was all well and good, but I was really looking forward to fishing as my experience is limited to ponds, and the Texas coast. We hired a guide out of Turtle Inn named Jason Westby. He's a young guy, but his family supposedly has some pretty deep roots in the fishing industry in Belize. He was quite the character. Left at 9a.m. and took this boat about 20 miles to the barrier reef, passing unbelievable water and small islands "cayes". Before we fished the reef, we had to catch some bait. We stopped at one of the farthest out cayes called Ranguana Caye. It literally pops out of nowhere and looks like a postcard. The guide says the bone fish is plentiful in the shallows. He caught live bait with a net in the shallows then we set off to the reef, which was another 10 minute ride. Ranguana Caye Ranguana Caye Ranguana Caye Ranguana Caye It was pretty rough, so it was hard to get action shots of the fishing. First we dropped lines about 65 ft deep off the barrier reef, caught a strawberry grouper and a trigger fish. After it got slow, we drifted a couple hundred yards West to meet up with his buddy and the two boats chummed the water with dead bait. We spin casted in this shallower water at 35 feet and that's where the action began. We had three reels constantly hooked for about an hour as did the other boat. The water is so full of fish and sea life that sometimes you'd get a huge hit on your bait and the line would take off like you caught jaws. The only thing you could see would be a shadow fly by. So there were things down there way bigger than our lines could handle. Aside from catching about a half dozen birds who would snatch our bait (and hooks) out of the sky while casting, we got into a mess of barracuda, amberjack, horse eye jack, pompano, yellow tail snapper and spanish mackerel. Our guide was pretty funny, he would swing his paddle at the birds to get them away, and of course club every barracuda after gaffing then to bring on board. Even though it was rough, you could still see the fish swarming below off the reef, which is awesome. We ended up with 26 fish. The amber jack and big barracuda I caught were around 25 to 30 lbs each. The kitchen at the resort cooked us barracuda steaks, snapper quesadillas, and blackened amberjack. It was delicious. The rest of the fish were given to the staff kitchen and also the local villagers. I definitely recommended Jason, he knows what he's doing, and he was very entertaining. We had a great time fishing with him.

No Ambergris Caye is closer to Mexico, I stayed closer to Guatemala/Honduran border. If I was to go back to Placencia, I'd probably stay at Chabil Mar or Robert's Grove. Turtle Inn was amazing, but expensive. My two favorite pictures form the trip Laughing Bird Caye Ranguana Caye You can actually rent one of the cabins on Ranguana Caye.
