It's for identification to prove the dog is yours incase it was lost or stolen. Tattoos have for the most part been replaced by microchips but there are still a few who tattoo.

One of my dogs was tattooed for testing purposes. One of the parents was an EIC carrier and the pups were tested to determine which were carriers and which were clear. This (tattoos or microchips) is required by testing organizations to permanently identify the dog in the event any issues arise in the future. My dog is clear and the paperwork I received from the University of Minnesota displays his tattoo number. Other breeders and/or owners do this as proof of ownership. Tattoos can fade and microchips are more reliable for identification.

Deutsch Drahthaars are required to be tattoed in their ear before they leave the breeder. Both of mine have their registration number in their ears.

We tatoo'd cattle in the ear Reg Angus, I think it was a reg. requirement....Horses that run on the track are tatoo'd under the front lip for identification by the steward..ect..It's been used for yrs. prior to micro chips for ident...short of branding..DD

Me and Dad used to tattoo all our coyote hounds in their ears with our initials for proof of ownership. I've done it many many times. We hunted them all over Texas and many hounds were lost and a few of them were stolen. This was back before the days of microchips, and tracking collars were way too expensive and didn't work very well.

Saw on tv last night drug cartels using dog to transport drugs ... Tattooed a number insider their ear to show how many packages are inside the dog! Alot of the dogs die after the get their dope cuz they don't worry about sewing the dog back up!

I can not say why your dog has a tattoo BUT as a breeder AKC requires breeders to mark the dog to identify it, I personally use collars which I mark the dam, the gender of the pup and the birth number for example Molly girl 02
I have seen tattoo devices also sold where I purchase my collars as a way to identify pups, this is not something I would want to do but as a breeder I can see how in the long run it would be less expensive then constantly changing collars as the pup grows.
I hope this helps

Some breeders go with the tattoo AND a chip. These will be referenced in your genetic defect warranty (if the breeder has provided you with a WRITTEN warranty) and become a permanent part of the dog's health record, as a vet should record this info with all health reports. Should you ever have a claim, you will have the tattoo/chip number associated with the vet records to verify that the records pertain to that dog.
ALSO, as mentioned earlier, many health screening facilities require permanent ID to list a dog on their registry. Without the permanent ID (or if you do not provide the info on a dog that does have permanent ID), the dog will have certified test results, but they won't appear on the online registry.

There is more types of ID for dogs than there is for small children.
