After the 270 & 30-06 thread I was wondering is there a preference between the 7mm-08 and 270. Btwn the "ballistic twins" is recoil a deciding factor?

I've never picked up a rifle and had recoil dictate whether I liked it or not. I have no preference between those 2.

Not much difference in the two. I have a .270 and see no need for the other at this point.

To me, 7mm-08 shoots softer in the same rifle (yes I have done the head-to-head).
If you want a more-compact rifle (short action, 20" or 22" barrel) the 7mm-08 is the right choice. If you want max velocity and less bullet drop then go .270 with a 24" barrel.
Most animals and all TX game would never know the difference.
Me, I built a .270 with a 22" barrel and run hand-loads so what the heck. I just like the .270 cartridge, and I like a 22" barrel for TX hunting.

For Texas hunting, it doesn't matter. Pick the caliber you can get the rifle you like in and go shoot it!

First rifle I bought is a 7mm-08, still have it and see no reason to own a 270.

And I've been using 270's for 50+ years and see no reason to try a 7-08. Fact is, they are very similar. Pretty much like comparing the 308 to the 30/06.

I shoot .270 but am looking hard at getting my daughter a 7mm-08 with reduced recoil loads for now and step her up as she gets older.

.270 imo its more than what you will ever need in Texas.

I have both and shot them both and my 300 weatherby yesterday at the range. IMO not alot of diffrence in recoil or accuracy with factory loads between the 2, I prefer my 270 cause Its a heavier gun and im much more stable is all.

Own both Browning 7mag & 270, shoot the 270. When I finally go Elk or Moose hunting, it will be the 7mag.

If you want cheaper ammo then 270 WRONG AGAIN, just bought 3 boxes for each yesterday at Carters Country and they were really close in price. as in $1 and change per box diffrence. Not enough to justify changing calibers IMO.

I have both. The 7-08mm is more enjoyable to shoot. I like the 270 as well though.

Simple answer to this is:
270 if you don't relaod, 7mm-08 if you do. The 7-08 is a joy to reload for.

I keep a little Howa 7mm-08 in my pickup for a "truck" gun. I really don't go hunting with it, but I keep it handy for the opportune coyote or hog.
I can tell you that I have run upon some 200+ lb boars that dropped like a rock when I put the crosshairs on their ear hole.
I bow hunt deer and hogs, but what little gun hunting I do I do it with that little Howa.
Back when I used to hunt deer with a rifle alot, I did shoot a Kimber in .270. Darn nice cartridge for that.
Mathews Z7 Bow for Whitetail and Hogs Remington R-15 .223 REM for predators I also like to "hunt" sporting clays with my Benelli SuperSport!

Either choice is a great one IMO, thats why i have both lol Guess I should have been more specific. You have more bullet and weight choices with a .284 round that a .277 round becuase the .284 is found in a ton more rounds than the .277. Making it more fun to reload a 7mm-08. Endless combinations to play with unlike the 270. If you don't reload the 7mm-08 to me the 270 is more practical as the ammo is easier to find and is generally less expensive.

both are great no wrong choice here If I had to pick one I would go with 7mm-08 If you have not bought one yet I would also recomend 25-06
If I put my wife in a high fence will her rack get bigger?
