Am thinking about putting together a friendly hunter competition maybe next year for myself and fellow hunters. Looking for suggestions/thoughts such as marksmanship archery/rifle/muzzleloader(ranges, targets, positions), setting/climbing stands, deer dragging with a dummy(leave it) deer, simulated game shots where hunter calls the shot, ect. Just asking for suggestions since ya'll come up with some great stuff and some on here have vivid imaginations! Sky is the limit! I think it would be a lot of fun to develop and participate. It has been quite obvious to me that most of the hunters I know are very competitive so why not have a hunter competition that is not based on how many or how big during the offseason. Thanks folks let's see what ya'll would like to see in a hunter competition if competing or watching.

One thing that seems pretty fun to do with archery (and I guess rifles for that matter) would me a poker game. target has different cards on it and you shoot for which card you want in your hand. I have been thinking about doing on at the house with my buddies but never got around to it yet.

Thanks but I am a fair shot but terrible card player. Was thinking more along the lines of marksmanship, hunting skills, and physical fitness to come into play. Will take your suggestion and develop from there though. I want to make it an Average Joe Hunting competition and see where it goes. Maybe I watched too much of the Olympics but after seeing some of the off the wall events there thought why not come up with a hunter competition that is fun but real world.

If the forum members are invited then I'd say you have to include story telling. Lol. I think they are making it an Olympic sport in Rio. Ha

Cool idea. I like it. Here's one for ya.....but ya gotta develope it. Most hunters can ALWAYS use more work/practise on tracking skills. would have to be simulated of course, but could be interesting.

Make it kinda like the total outdoorsman challenge. But just for THFers. I say no weights, more on your physical ability to move and such rather than just broad strength. And you should be able to pick 5 workout and 5 skill events and the winner of each class gets a prize. Maybe if like everyone put in $10 to play then there would be prize money or the guy running the show could use that money to buy a rifle to give as the grand prize. I'd do that cuz it sounds like a blast, this is what the registration form should have on it.
Real Name: Screen Name: Age: Events: Residence: Main hunting places:
And these should be some of the events
Free hand rimfire shooting-100 yds Bench rest rimfire shooting-150 yds Open sight free hand shooting- 100 yds A bow competition of some sort Long range shooting from prone- 400yds Skeet competition And a airsoft competition. Last man standing wins Palm forward pull ups Sit ups Flutter kicks Pushups 100 yd swim 1 mile run
I'm thinking a point system would be good, say first place gets 25 points, second 15 and third 5, and a dog competition would be fun. Hound trailing, and bird dogs.someone else throw out some ideas.

I also think we need to fill out our registration forms before the event on here so no one can cheat. And a one mile run is pretty far, maybe 2 or 3 at the most.

Haha! But who is going to run this? I think we need sponsors, I I think sponsors should watch the first year and pick people to sponsor for the next year. And, we need a tv show.

Here we go, more ideas
TIMED SHOOTS AR15: 50 targets @ 30 yds/ 20sec Pistol: 50 targets @ 15 yds/ 20sec Bolt, lever& pump open sight: 50 targets @ 25 yds/ 20sec Open sight semi auto: 75 targets @ 25 yds/ 20sec Revolver: 7 targets @ 15 yds/5sec Red Ryder: 50-75 targets @ 15yds/ 30sec
CHALLENGES Can- most hits in a row w/ out missing: starting distance 15 yds any gun you want to use
Card split- rifle- 3 shots big bore 50 yds Card split- rifle- 3 shots small bore 50 yds Card split- pistol/ revolver- 5 shots big bore 15 yds Card split- pistol/ revolver- 5 shots small bore 15 yds
Any one who can complete the challenges gets 10 extra points for each challenge completed
EXERCISES lunges 25 yard swim and 100 yard dash 25 yard run and 100 yard swim Palm facing you pull ups
AGE GROUPS 60 + 59-45 44-35 35-30 30-20 19-16 15-10
And I figure we could have 3-4 person teams Say we have 100 people sign up, 25 team captains and they pick 3 other people, and the team with the most points at the end of the competition all get 10/22s or split a cash prize. Sounds like a good way to pick to me. And it'd have to be somewhere in central Texas so everyone could get a equal chance to go. Like Brady, mason, sansaba, comanche, or brownwood so there's hotels and such for people to stay at if they need to.

Thanks folks this was the kinda input I was hoping for will look at all of it and hopefully anyone that wants to throw something in get after it. Maybe incorporate a physical agility into some of the shooting competitions ie a hundred yards covered however fast you want to make it but followed up with a five shot group with total time taken to complete added into the scoring. Maybe include waterfowl skills, instead of 100 yard sprint for time a 100 yard wading contest for time with sporting clay shots simulating waterfowl at different increments during the course...add real time hunting shots simulating true hunting positions we encounter or may encounter on a rifle/archery/muzzleloader hunt... Keep em coming the ideas so far are great!

Gotta have an event where a man must haul a 50lb bag of corn up a ladder and stack them up without them falling.

There are more logistics than you realize. I've been thinking that this could be held in or near College Station, the best time to do it would be after the holidays but before the students return for the spring semester. I don't think there is time to do it before hunting season this year. Although it does not have to be held in CS. DFW, or Austin area would be fine but there would have to be a place to shoot and do the PT portions as well. If someone had a ranch with the right kind of set up, it could be done there as well. I'll PM you and we can discuss it more. Thanks.

I don't know how you'd do a skinning competition, but there are ranges in most of the towns I mentioned and there are definitely ranches to shoot on if you paid the owner or some how got him to agree.
