Why would you want to?
It's just me but I don't kill for the sake of killing. To each his own though. maybe you didn't catch some of the comments about them in this thread. Dogs can get tore up, they are rough on trees and hide in protein feeders and can injure fawns If I see a problem and feel like I need to thin the herd, I would like to know what the rules are, thats all.

We used to shoot everyone we saw in Michigan. Dang things are hard on bird populations. How is that? We had a lot of porcupines it seemed. One day I shot one and when I went over to look at it it was on a quail nest. Broke every last egg. We didn't have turkey on the property back then but I can imagine it being the same.

I too don't kill for the sake of it, except for coyotes and porcuquills... seen way too many young animals killed by them. Youngster, full of curiosity, sees funny-looking slow waddling animal, investigates and gets slapped in face. Can't eat, can't drink or suckle... dies slow painful death. Killed youg grey fox one time (while calling) that actually was biting on the metal external speaker, was full of quills... put him out of his misery.

I'm not trying to stir the pot but the bottom line is that God, in his infinite wisdom, put them here to be a part of the entire ecosystem. I see no reason to kill them all because some curious animal got too close. Perhaps that's part of God's plan to ensure the strength of the herd. If a member of the herd is so dumb that it messes with something like a porcupine then perhaps it should be selected out of the herd.
As for dogs and porcupines: most every county in Texas has leash laws meaning that dogs shouldn't be running loose, which means that they shouldn't be able to run the pasture and have access to porcupines. If they are running loose and encounter a porcupine then so be it. Not much sympathy here.
I've lived in the country my entire life and nothing hacks me off more than people's dogs running amok.
Like I said, I don't kill for no reason. These critters are part of God's will, doing what he intended them to do. As with coyotes and wolves, I see no need to kill them all. The only exception I make is with hogs. They're not part of God's plan. They're result of man's carelessness and need killin'.
I'm certainly not pushing my personal beliefs on anyone else and I'm not judging anyone here. Just stating my personal position on the matter.

It's all about a good control plan. I see this everyday in the real world. Hogs can be kept to a minimum, it just takes commitment and most folks had rather grip bout the hogs than do the right thing. Coyotes "DO" eat your fawns and grown deer alike. Again it takes commitment to keep the numbers down. If you have 10 coyotes on a thousand acers and they catch 10 fawns a week for 10 weeks that's 100 deer you can't shoot. Real studies have proven this but the gov continues to tell you they don't. Why? Cause they don't want to spend the time or energy to do it. They get your money and tell you they are broke. Some government control program that is. They done studies in January on coyotes and concluded their was no fawns eaten. The problem is there is no fawn in January!!!! While every one is fishi g in the summers hogs and coyotes go pretty much unchecked. While this is going on your fawns suffer the loss. Coons take over the protein feeders and hogs run amuck!

Mike, Just like in many other things man has upset natures balance. We have eliminated the martens and fishers that keep porcupines in check. In the natural environment low numbers of porcupines are fine in high numbers they are destructive. The important thing to cull and control, not to eliminate, when you start seeing a lot of damage it's time to cull.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Guys, I said "Killing for no reason". If their numbers are out of whack then there's a reason. Too much of anything can be bad. I didn't say "Don't kill 'em". All I said is that I do not agree with killing for the sake of killing. Big difference.
We all know someone, or may have done it ourselves, that killed for the sake of killing. I did it when I was young. I don't know why. Maybe because I could. However, I've since matured. That's all I'm saying.

Oops...I left out rattlesnakes... I don't "selective cull" those either. I know too many "mature" cowmen that have lost livestock (mostly young calves) due to porkys and I doubt if it has ever entered their minds about "that calf is dumb for messing with a porcupine and should be selected out of the herd". Call me sympathetic if you will, but I just don't like to see any animal suffer (wild or domestic, especially young), even coyotes, from the impartial slapping of a porcupine.

Our Rancher and game warden gave us the okay. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Getting those poor porcupines drunk like that.

Coyotes, fire ants, [censored] roaches and porcupines. You can kill all you want and they will still be around when you are gone.

That's all I'm saying. x2 the deer an everything has been dealing with the little porkers longer than we have i mean its not like they are chaseing down the fawns or anything some people just kill stuff to kill it

I see one or two every other year in Hays county, sometimes as road kill. 4-5 years ago I can across a fairly young one while riding a four wheeler at night near Dripping Springs. I got off and was watching it, got too close and it came at me. Then came at me again. I had to get between it and the girl I was with, that's when it got me on the hand. We went back to the house and pulled out maybe 10 quills. I still don't kill them though, and I've seen them since. I don't hold a grudge. I've seen a few dogs who had a face full of quills, all in side their mouths and nose. Looked terrible.

I'm guessing you don't have any bird dogs....your pointer doesn't do much good on a leash by your side. Nothing in a leash law about a dog on your own property either.

Seen them in Concho, Gillespie, and Real counties. Haven't run across any in Llano county yet, but betting they're there. I got no issue with them and let them pass.

I have never seen a porcupine in the wild in my 40+ years of hunting?
