RGC's son was shooting a Mossberg youth 20 Ga and it kicked pretty good. Can't speak to the Remington youth 870.

I'd go look at a SA-08 Weatherby.

NEF makes a 28 gauge single shot. If recoil is a concern. Hard as heck to find though

Every kid is different at all ages. Gun safety I'd the number one lesson. The 28 ga and 410 are a little hard to find in steel shot

Another vote for single shot 20, maybe with a little recoil dampening due to lightness.

The gas operated is eaiser on the shoulder.

As long as the kids are big/strong enough to handle the weight of a pump or auto. If not, all that is a moot point. My girl Kendall has been anxiously awaiting her 3901. Only poblem is that she is not strong enough to SAFELY handle it. She can shoulder it but the barrel waves all over the place. Unless some miracle happens in her strength/growth in the next few months she will be shooting her youth model oneshot one more season. Also, if the OP kids have no experience with shotguns, they should only shoot one shell at a time wheteher it be a single, pump or auto until OP feels they can handle another round after recoil. I have taken many a kids with their dads hunting over the 16 years I have been guiding and have seen way too many times a gun handle the kid because the yungun wasn't ready for that big a gun or capable of safely firing multiple rounds. Had to almost shut down a hunt when I strongly requested to a father that he only allow his son one shell at a time and he got upset. He should have thanked me as the barrel of his kid's gun was less than a foot from his head when the second shell was fired after the kid rocked back and to the side from the first shell. But he insisted that little Johnny had control and he bought that gun so his son would have " 3 chances". Yeah, three chance to blow his head off. rolleyes Point is, make sure your kids can not only shoulder a gun with complete steadiness and swing steady, but moreover make damn good and well that they can handle the recoil of a fired shell safely before you enable them to shoot another round in succession. Sorry this is longwinded but in my blinds safety always comes first.
THIS^^^^^^^^!!!!!!!!! Starting children out with a gun too heavy or not balanced right will only develop very bad wing shooting habits that they will have to un-learn as they get older and want to hit more often. I did not allow my kids to shoulder a loaded shotgun till Jr.High aged. Worked out great for them,me,and my hunting partners.

Depending on how big your kids are should dictate the type of gun they can handle. You might love your Pump gun but a youth model 870 or 500 kicks like a mule. Any auto you select is going to be much better on a youngster. And if you ever want to sell it you'll have people climbing over each other to buy it. There are some inexpensive autos out there that wont break the bank that are pretty reliable if you dont want to go the "B" gun route. The Charles Daly 20 ga. youth is one of the best and least expensive guns for youth you can buy. Ive heard some good things about the Escort youth model auto as well.

Ok guys. I bought the 870. After looking at it with her and my wife fitting them the remington just had a stonger assembly and just was a better made and handled gun.

K so here is a problem, the ______ choke tube won't come out! I also don't want to keep trying cause I'm afraid I'm going to strip it with the crappy key they give.

Now I have heard put it in kroil for a day, also transmission fluid will do the same thing. Looked on youtube and not much on choke tubes that are stuck. Also looked into buying a tighter wrench (maybe I am just not getting enough torque with the cruddy loose wrnech they gave)Should I just shoot it a few sessions and see if it heats it up etc?

Steering away from paying a gunsmith to do it for me considering ITS A NEW GUN! I also got from Academy and to my understanding the will just tell me they have a policy that you have to send it back. Has a 2 year warranty and not a huge deal cause it's modified and thats all they would need anyway.

Just saying I bought a new gun and don't expect the choke to be air compressed in there. lol.

Any thoughts?

Call Remington tech support, you may only need to send in the barrel.
See if they won't send you another barrel, you may have to give them a CC# to insure they get the bad one back. That's normal bussiness practice. Be sure, if they will do that to get a return material authorazation number.

Actually just called and talked to a nice guy. He said no problem try some PB Blaster or Kroil. If that doesnt work use it for the season and call to have the barrel switched out. Also referenced his name to say they would take care of it. So far excellent customer service with Remington.

Just was nervous cause I know way to many companies that have those "loop holes" in warranties but with a 2 year warranty on their guns looks like they will stand behind thier product. smile

Can't wait to get them out there shooting so we can make some memories.

Remington has treated me right over the years. My last time I delt with them was with a 2.5 year old 11-87 unable to eject shells, 6 weeks I had the gun back and no problems since, cost me 25 bucks for shipping at the local gun shop..

Good luck, sounds like you got the unlucky lotto with this one..

If the Kroil doesn't work, put some heat to it. If you have a propane torch, heat the first couple of inches of the barrel and the tube should come out. I've got a Fabarm Gold Lion that bonds to choke tubes at a sub-atmoic level.

Once you get the choke tube out, get some anti-seize compound from Auto Zone and lube the threads up before reinstalling it.

I wouldn't heat the barrel. It could affect the finish and void the warranty.

Yea I'm not keen on heating the tube up other than shooting clays. It's not a huge deal I'll just shoot it this year and in the off season have them send me another barrel. It's just one of those things. Prob just seized up from sitting on the shelf.

i would not heat with a torch either. That would almost certainly void the warranty if it left a noticable mar in the finish. Id try the pb blaster first and then Id try removing it after shooting it a number of times. Let the shells heat the barrel.

Find someone with a Benelli, use their choke tube wrench, very stout. I have one welded into a piece of pipe for just such cases.
