Saw this snake cruisin' through the pasture and stopped to take care of him. By the time I got out he had coiled and was waiting for me. So I picked him up and then he did the strangest thing...HE BIT HIMSELF. That's right, he sunk his fangs right into his own side. He was motionless in less than 10 seconds. I popped him on the head for good measure and sure enough no response. Took his head and tail off and left him where he lay. PS: I've seen a lot more snakes since I got the snake boots. Anybody want a slightly used pair that have been "filled" only a couple of times?

Clearly a case of rattlesnake rabies. Be very careful not to come into any contact with any of his bodily fluids.

I heard that about rattlesnakes when I was young. That you take one and provoke it long enough and it would eventually turn and bite itself. I thought is was BS but guess it is true.

It's immune to its own venom. It didn't die from the bite. Isn't that why people milk snake venom, to get all the antibodies to make antivenom?

I think it just paralized itself in all honesty. After the bite it went limp on the catch stick, I laid it out and it didn't move a bit afterwards. Like I said, I tapped it on the head and no response with tonge hanging out.

That is crazy! I don't know if it is true, but I have heard rattlers are immune to bites from other rattlers, but if they bite themselves it will kill them.

Studies have shown that though they are resistant, they are not immune. I would be surprised that it had an almost immediate effect though. I have seen a few snakes turn on themselves but have never seen an effect from the bites. Usually, it is after I have harrased them alot though. Cool story and thanks for sharing.

Not sure about all, but Pygmy rattlers have been known to eat other rattlers, do it is assumed they are not immune to each others bites...but rattlers are thought to be more resistant to other venomous snakes than any other snake

Sounds like he hit a nerve or his spinal cord. They sure ain't immune to venom, but it should take a while to take effect. When we catch em for the round up, we learned quick to not pull them out at home to show people. We'd have 10-20 to a box and would sometimes pull a few out to show off. In 08 we had a snake that was going to win big snake for the round up 52" or so I believe, pulled him out to let people have a look and on the way back into the box wham tagged by another snake in the box. He was still ok the next morning but at weigh ins that evening he was dead. A 50" snake won it since ours was dead.

Paralisis was the wrong term. Rattlers have hemotoxic venom that causes hemoraging. I would only guess the hemoraging effected muscle movement, and would explain the amount of blood that came out of its mouth when I gave it the death blow to the head.
I was wrong, appologies to all.
But it still the dumbest snake I ever did saw!

Foreman at the place I work said one day they caught one that had just eaten a dove, it kept striking at itself right where the dove was. Only thing they could figure out was that the doves body was still warm and since that is how they are able to sense where stuff is that is why it kept biting itself.

Well, my only source was an internet google searching, so I still don't know. One source was www.venomousreptiles.org I guess I've been lucky, I've been in Texas over 35 years and never seen a live rattle snake in the wild except once... It was the last day of spring turkey season in Blanco Co. txhntr - where did you see these studies? It might be neat to read. Or very boring...

no telling how many have "seen" you without you knowing it if you have spent much time in the woods, not a very comforting thought
