It’s not uncommon to see large boars by themselves. Perhaps they are solitary creatures by choice or perhaps they are so mean the herd doesn't want to be around them. What I couldn't have known at the time was this hog was alone because he had eliminated all competition and threats in his life. He was an apex predator, a killer through and through.

He was right in the middle of a mile by mile stubble field recently turned over. Even after stalking several hundred yards, he was still getting smaller. We debated going back to the truck and driving around, but I was too anxious, so we trudged on. Since he was grazing steadily away, we were able to forgo stealth mode and hastened our pace. I kept watch over him with the pvs14, looking for any sign of him showing suspicion. We were closing in when he suddenly turned broadside over 250 yards away. We froze in our steps. Moments later he turned just his head and stared straight at us.

I don’t care how blind hogs are, he was looking right at me. Suddenly I felt like an ocean swimmer who sees a fin pop up. This hog had definitely tasted human flesh before, but looked like he also killed just for pleasure. I wished I was hunting from a shark cage.

I setup my shooting sticks in slow motion and Flint setup alongside. 250 yards is pretty far at night with a 4x scope shooting off sticks. Add a deadly quarry in the sight picture that knows you’re there and isn't afraid, and the crosshairs are going to shake a bit. We both fired, and then I witnessed a feat that momentarily silenced my rifle. I could only watch in awe as he reared up on his hind legs and leapt into the air over and over; all four feet off the ground. He looked like a marlin jumping out of the water to throw the hook. After the acrobatics, he turned to charge, snapping me back into reality. A shot to the snout broke his face and made him veer off enough for some body shots. A couple more to the head and neck finished it.

The other four hogs came from a previous kill zone. They should have known better than to enter into a death trap after witnessing last week’s episode at the same location. In fact, one of the hogs was limping, perhaps having graced my cross hairs before.

Way to go Grey Ghost!

I wonder if the hogs tell eachother war stories about the time they saw the emphamis Grey Ghost and how most around them died, but some how they made it out to tell their story.

Is that Doc from Back to The Future with you in the pic? That explains a lot.

You stalk them, then set the time machine to go back a few minutes before you found them. Damn crafty!
