I bought the super mag about a year and a half ago and I really like it. Smooth shooting gun, no issues, and nothing really fancy about it.

There junk, buy and older one and you will get more out of it. I have one thats 12 years old and looks like hammered dog poo and doesnt miss a lick when i need to use it. The new ones seem to be made cheaper!!

Had one 4 years ago - loved the way it handled - but it WOULD NOT kick out cheap shells or light weight hulls

Save your money... I was in the same boat as you're in now. I was wanting to get a "decent" and "cheap" shotgun for migratory hunting, but after a LOT of research (and talking to the oldies), Remington just ain't what it used to be.

When did they become "cheap"?

An 870???? That's cheap when you compare it to what a lot of migratory hunters use!

I guess I should clarify... "cheaper."

I have to agree about the gun not ejecting cheap shells, but i wouldn't trade my 870 for anything. Its a smooth straight shooting gun. Especially for the price point.

I love my old one in 20ga. but I have no experience with the newer ones. For just a little bit more money you could get you a benelli nova

I have one that is only a couple years old and the only thing is it doesn't like federal shells. It will shoot Xperts all day with out missing a beat.

I have one that's about three years old and at first it would get stuck about once every ten shots with cheap shells. After a couple hundred rounds through it, it shoots everything now without a problem.

I like my 870 but its about 13 years ok now. For a low priced good quality US made gun, you could look at the Mossburg 500

I have a Benelli Nova and a Mossberg 835. I have shot my friends 870 and prefer both the Mossberg and Benelli better. The Benelli is heavier so I get less recoil.

Got mine for Christmas 1972. Guess that makes it an old one, but it's still smooth as silk. Probably the most accessorized shotgun out there. I have several costumes for mine - right now it's a red dot slugger. I'll probably wingshoot with the Model 11, another (old) favorite.

i have the SBE2, and i love it. My buddy is wanting to get a new "cheap" gun, and the first thing that came to my mind was the 870, but i have heard that they arent the same as they used to be?.

Its hard to compare an 870 express to an 870 wingmaster. Wingmasters cycle smooth as silk and the express feels like it has sand in the action right out of the box. I still shoot the wingmaster my Dad got new in 1968. It shoots perfectly. I also have a 2 year old express that I really dont like. To many pressed and plastic parts.

What is the difference between the new ones and the old ones?

I bought a brand new one in 2006 and hated it because it jambed so bad. I still have it and now I absolutley love it. These things make really good shotguns if you will pull the barrel off of it when you get it and sand the fool out of the chamber. I used about a 4 inch long X 3/8 inch diameter roll pin with 180 grit sand paper wrapped around it about a half a dozen times chucked up in my hand drill to do this. Sand on it some, take it out and shoot it with some light loads with the aluminum primer head. Those will jamb the worst because they seem to expand more. If it is still jambing sand it some more. It took me about two good sandings to get this one right but it shoots as good as anything out there. I think it was machined correctly at the factory but I think what happens is they get some of that coating that they put on the barrels inside the chamber and you have to get that out......

i was in the same boat about a year ago. i read a whole lot of bad reviews on the 870's and saved a little more money and got me a black benelli nova pump 12 gauge instead. used it for about a year now and am very glad i went with the benelli. and the price wasnt outrageous either. got mine at academy last year for 379.00 and came to a total bill of $410 when it was all said and done
