Unit 61 for cow elk and bear- first rifle. I'll be with 4 guys that used their 18 preference points each to get bull tags.

My dad and some of his friends are hunting elk about 30 miles from rifle co with bows at silver spur outfitters. Hes shot an elk there the last 2 years with a rifle but hes using a bow and hunting in the rut this year.

That is great to hear. It will be our first elk pilgramage so we have been trying to gather as much info as possible. 4 brothers, fairly well fit, but we realize the challenge ahead as first timers in the Rockies. We are looking forward as hell to the adventure.

It's rough country. But if you get more then a mile off the road you will have a shot. Also huntin Cantonese and basins is a good idea. What it takes in my opinion is walking and walking then more walking.

Well that matches up to a lot of what we have heard and read. Our plan is to put the extra effort in to get where others dont want to go (because of the roughness of the country)and really go in as deep as our legs will allow. We are 4 guys on a mission so we plan to put the work in. We are excited about the whole experience and the chance to all hunt together for the first time. If we bring an elk out....man...wouldnt that be sweet.

Before the a lot of the tags became unit specific, we hunted along both sides of Curecanti creek. The west side is unit 63, the east side is unit 54. The east side of Curecanti (unit 54) has ALWAYS held elk. Their is a trailhead north of Hwy 92 at the end of a USFS road that will put you on a good trail into the West Elks and right into the area I am talking about.

I chose 63 because by 70 yr old father hunts the flatter ground on Black Mesa, but I will be just across Curecanti from you guys - run em my way!

This dude is in Unit 54 in 2008. Less than 10 yards - I had a cow tag!

These pictures are taken from Unit 63 looking across Curecanti Creek into Unit 54.

I'll be there for my first time with an elk and a mule deer tag. I think we're going to units 80/81. I'm going with a group of guys that have been going for 20 or 30 years to roughly the same place. Muzzle loader hunting for us.
