I currently use Frontline Plus and a buddy of mine was pushing K9 Advantix b/c he says it repels also. Anybody have an opinion on this?

They are both good but both are WAAAAYYY overpriced. Go to one of the Russel feed stores or look online at Dr Foster & Smith at -(Bio Spot)- Same ingredients as the expensive ones 90 day supply for about $17.00 no prescription required

FWIW, I use permethrin (bought at a feed store) and mix it up in a spray bottle. Super cheap and works well if applied every 25-30 days.

I just had this conversation with a guy I took hunting this weekend who was a researcher and sales rep for Frontline. He says, always buy plus and the way it works is the skin-fat cells(sorry, here is where it went over my head for a while) absorb it and spread it ALL over the body. Test showed it even on their toes. Anyway, the fleas die within 24 hours from crawling around on the dog. If you have a flea infestation, use it everymonth for three months and it will get rid of your infestation-something to do with length of hatching/reproduction cycle.
He also said that most people think a flea is still alive the next day or the Frontline is not working, when in fact, it'a new flea.

Both work well. Frontline does kill the flea not just sterilize it.
Don't bank too much on the repellant aspect of Advantix on mosquitos. The rep for the company that makes the product said the repellant only last about a week before it gets extremely weak. But it does do well for fleas.
Frontline contains an ingredient that third world countries use for a mosquito repellant, so it probably has some repellant effects too but the company who makes it does not advertise it. It works on fleas well too.
Use what works best for your dog.

They do where do you think the idea came from... same with cattle pour on wormer... where did the idea come from I wonder but I wonder how many of us want to walk around with toxic chemicals in our fat cells.

Do you guys give an credence to the notion of these products causing liver problems and fatty tissue growths in older dogs after using for extended time ----I have used these products for two generations of labs---Both dogs were from different lines- Both show the same conditions. High levels of white blood cells in liver ( hardening ) and Fatty tissue lumps / tumors under skin. Right where tissue absorbs chemical.

"The practice of deworming livestock received a big boost in the early 1980s with the commercial arrival of ivermectin, the leading product in a class of anthelmintics known as macrocyclic lactones. This broad-spectrum anthelmintic was effective against both internal and external parasites across many species, even in humans, where it was heralded for its effectiveness in eliminating River Blindness in the Third World." web page You can probley find a lot more if you really dig.

I have seen people that don't do anything to their dogs as far as vaccinations or any type of flea/tic treatment that have the same problems. So I don't correlate the two, there are too many factors in a dogs life to come to certain assumptions, esp. since the average life span of a dog has increased (much like humans) that it's hard to say whether or not grandpa's dog would have had the same issues if it lived as long as the dogs of today.
Plus, I have personally yet to see a dog that formed a fatty tissue tumor where chemicals have been applied.

----- I buy pour on cattle fly treatment containing permethrin. It can be found at most feed stores and Tractor Supply. It's got an oil base to it and stays on the dog for a couple of weeks before needing retreatment. I use about 10cc for a 70lb dog. A 2 gallon bottle costs about 45 bucks and will last forever. Be sure not to let any cats get exposed to permethrin.
