Morning yall,
This is my first post. Im an avid fresh/saltwater angler and frequent visit the Texas Fishing Forum. However, I also do target pistol shooting occasionally with my pistols when time permits.
Lately, Ive been thinking of taking up target rifle shooting.
I have a Remington 1917 30-06 that was given to me as payment several years ago. But I never have fired it. On top of that, its missing all of the sight components.
For sure, Im going to take it to a gunsmith for safety inspection. But I would also like to have a scope installed.
Can anyone suggest any good scopes for this rifle (for those that are starting out?
I just want something simple and not complex. Although I would like to go hunting someday, I really just want something good and effective to use at the range.
Also, I want to keep costs as low as possible.
Thanks in advance.

Don't go cheap. Buy a quality scope and it will likely last a lifetime.

Don't go cheap. Buy a quality scope and it will likely last a lifetime. Yes, Ive been told that. But what would be one (Brand & Model) that you would recommend? I'll have $200 (maybe $300). Im not being cheap, this is just what I have budgeted for now. It hasn't been easy to make ends meet.

I have a silver scope on my 30-06 that I started with, would like to upgrade to Leupold. I'll sell it to you and upgrade. It is a shooter with this scope. Interested in a good used silver scope?

I can't really speak for other brands since all of my rifles have Leupold variable powered scopes on them.

You will get the whole range of opinions here. At that price range, my choice would be a Redfield 4-12x40. Something like this http://www.opticsplanet.com/redfield-rev...ge-reticle.htmlIf you don't want to spend that much, the 3-9x40 will be sufficient. However, I always believe in getting as much zoom as is practically possible in your budget.

oh yea, welcome.
This forum tends to generally have good info and feedback. All you'll have to do is sift through some of the bs and illogical biases. But there's not too much of that here.

Simmons actually isn't a bad scope for the money I just upgraded mine to Leopoldo but the Simmons did pretty well in low light and killed (or hit where I was aiming) every time

Adan- There are several options out there. Burris still makes some good stuff. Bushnell depending on the model. Of course there's Leupold and Nikon. Redfield now owned by Leupold. Check out Vortex. Weaver. Also check out my website. www.swfa.comI have coupons for TexasHuntingForum members. Free shipping code is THFFS and 8% off you order when you use THF8 I would also take a look at Minox. I have several of these on sale right now that are sales demos that are going really cheap. This link will take you directly to them. www.Samplelist.com

I agree with Skylar on his list, the Bushnell 3200 or 4200s and Burris FF are all good choices in that range. Also have tried a Minox and it has been a good scope, so far.

I am gonna differ and say buy a referb Zeiss conquest 3x9x40 from cameralandny.com then if you decide you don't want to play this game you can resale and not lose money, and of you decide you like the game then it is quality glass and you don't have to upgrade. I wish I had started this way

Just contact Skylar at SWFA, who has commented above and keep your money in Texas, I promise he will take care of ya. Instead of sending it to New York to help fund their Govenors anti-gun agenda, or to Opticsplanet the biggest crooks on the web.

Also, I want to keep costs as low as possible. 10x Super Sniper- new from SWFA or used from an individual. Perfect starter scope(dont let starter fool you, This scope is for real in its price range). Bullet proof and easy to operate. They also hold their value. Most people have paid 300 or less and I personaly have never seen one sell for less than 225 used.

Oh so now supporting Doug is a bad thing I didn't say that, I said sending money out of state is. Especially to New York State. A percentage of of every dollar you spend with him goes into the New York Govenor's anti-gun war chest. If doug wants to move down here I would check him out. Has nothing to do with Doug, It has to do with Loyalty to your State and your beliefs, both of which your selling out just to not pay tax and shipping. SWFA does price match.

Thank you all again for pointing me in the right direction. I'll definitely look into Redfields.
Skylar, I'll definitely take those coupon offers up.

Adan: Like Skylar said, consider the Minox. I just ordered a 3x9x40 from the Sample list, under $200 shipped to my door. It's German glass and retails for over $400. Lifetime warranty and a heck of a scope for under $200.
