I first started shooting my 7 mag with 140 grain Rem. core lokt(I think that was the style, it had a plactic insert in the tip), fairly pricey a box and not sold everywhere. These were great and had great exit wounds with massisve stopping power but dropped fast past 100 yards.
On the night before a trip I ran to walmart(only thing open) and picked up 2 boxexs of 150 grain Remingtons - cheap kind and especially cheap for 7 mag ammo, again, not exactly sure of precise name, just know they were the cheapest ones. Every animal I have shot with this round, deer and hog, have dropped where they were, as long a I shot a perfect heart/lung shot. One deer at 100 yards didn't exit wound and didn't bleed at all but dropped where he stood. As a matter of fact, I couldn't even find the entry wound until I field dressed him. A hog had similar effects. My problem is, I've shot two hogs on the run with this 150 grain round. I heard the impact of the bullet, rolled both of them, and both of them got up and took off. These were not monster hogs and should have died, but I couldn't even find blood.
I want to get a round and brand that will give me good exit wounds, disable them, or atleast leave a good blood trail. Should I go back to the core lokt(??? I'm not even sure of the name) or do any of you ballistic geniouses have a better suggestion?
I would like to get a flatter round as well, if possible.
Thanks, all advice appreciated.

The bullets that you are calling Cor Lokts with the plastic tips are actually Ballistic tips, and the 150 grain cheap Remingtons that you bought at Wal Mart are the Core Lokts. The first bullet with the plastic tips (ballisic tip) should not have droped very fast at 100 yards like you said because it is extremly areodynamic and is made for flatter trajectory in longer range shooting situations!
My only suggestion would be to go with a bonded ballistic tip like the Accubond, or Scirrocco. They are both very tough and areodynamic also!

I've heard of hitting the shoulders on hogs and not being able to prenetrate them with a 7mm mag. I 'm not sure whether I believe it or not, but if you rolled them they soaked up a lot of that energy some where. I've use the green box 150gr core lokt's on deer for a long time and they've always worked well. http://www.texashuntingforum.com/ubbthre...true#Post284776My dad has done two 2-fer shots going through two deer, killing them both at 100 yards. He even tore a chunk out of one of his feeder legs after punching through a doe this year. You might try backing off the shoulder and going for the lungs, or try a heavier bullet, maybe trophy bonded 180gr or something.
Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

The heart/lung area on a hog is farther forward than on a deer. If you want a heart/lung shot you pretty much have to go right at the shoulder, not behind it. A shot behind the shoulder on an adult hog will generally be a liver shot...long run and hard to find. If you always want an exit wound on hogs with a high velocity round like the 7Mag, I'd agree with the earlier poster who recommended TSX bullets....or partitions, or accubonds, etc. alternatively, shoot the hogs behind the ear with a 22-250 and they won't go anywhere.

It's hard to tell what's what in these pics, but it's worth looking at. I guess he's right, if you're gonna get heart or lung, you've got a pretty small area to hit. http://www.texasboars.com/anatomy.html
Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

The first cartridges I used, Ballistic tips I know now, took a huge 4X8" chunk out of the back of a 300lb sow and droped her there. Of Course, I shot her about 20 feet away after she turned on a charge.
I think I give the Federals suggested above a chance. I really like thier .40 pistol rounds.
Thanks for the tips.

Check out the Hornady SST bullet. I HIGHLY recommend this bullet in 7mag, just don't make a direct shoulder shot or you will have pretty much lost the front two shoulders. With behind the shoulder shots only a few ribs are broken, short blood trails and massive exits you can honestly stick your fist in!
The wierdest thing happened this past season while shooting this load. A coyote popped out and I figured I would take the shot. Perfect shoulder shot, but somehow the bullet travelled up the spine of the yote and popped out a large piece of skull between the ears. When I say large I mean there was pretty much nothing but mush between the two ears. The only thing I could figure was the the yote was angling awkwardly to the shot.

I've shot Federal Premium 165 gr. BTSP for the past 8 years and have never had a deer or hog take more than a couple steps. They group the best out my Tikka....just my .02....

Thanks guys, I bought the above federals AT $49 A BOX and will start with those first!!! I also found some more of those cheap Remingtons. I guess I'll be luging lead down range this summer to see what I like best. Hogs and yotes will be my test subject before deer season starts.
