Will neutering my 3 1/2 yr old lab prevent him or lessen the chance of him trying to escape if he encounters a female in heat?
Moving to a new neighborhood and there are 3 dogs that come from another neighborhood and roam ours. I called the owners, they just said ya we don't have fences so they just roam around but will always come back. Thats fine and dandy, except one of the dogs just got done nursing, so I know she's not fixed. I won't be too happy if their dog causes my lab to go crazy and escape and get run over, due to not spaying their dog that they let run free.

going to put up a 5' fence, use an invisible fence, and maybe even hotwire. Will getting my dog neutered help with not trying to get at the b**** ?

I would put up the fence because invisable fence.won't keep their dogs out.

Am not sure if it would stop the urge since he has already gone through puberty.

Also tell your neighbor you will call animal control if he doesn't keep his dogs off your property.

I'd say it won't help. I have a male that was neutered young and he still enjoys the "sniff" and has tried "the deed". He doesn't go as crazy as the intact dogs, but he seems to like the idea.

Better get the fence built.

The fence will be built, along with invisible fence, just trying to decide on the neutering and whether or not it will help his urge to get out when he comes in contact with a female in heat.

We've had both a neutered and intact Labrador. I can tell you, neutering will definitely take the wind out of his sails. He will still pick up on the smell of a female in heat, but the overall drive/urge diminishes greatly.

Unless you plan on continuing his bloodline, please neuter your dog.

He is your friend defender your dog. Be worthy of such devotion
