I've heard there is public land hunting for mule deer around lake Meredith. Does anyone know if this true or not? I looked it up bit couldn't find anything.

yes there is public land out there, there's places that are atv accessible, places that you can drive to and places to where it's accessible by packing in or mules, horses.I've been only once and it's strange cause there's always a ton of hunters out of state, particularly colorado. There are some monsters down there, but I'll be honest it looks like a pumpkin patch down there for those two weeks. But then again it's public and free.

Do you know if there's more people during archery or rifle season

there are designated bow areas during mule season, but as far as the majority of the lake it's mostly rifle hunters,if you can get here in October bow season is very minimal on the amount of hunters for white tail

Hunted there a couple years ago. The mulies were in the thick stuff on the opposite side of public access. The lake is almost dry. Saw lots of dead snakes so watch out if it is warm. lots of pressure during muley season.

We hunted it last year during bow season. Saw a total of 6 deer. 4 does and 2 bucks. A buddy of mine I work with went two weeks before us and didn't see a thing. We did a lot of driving around and hiking and didn't see anything legal. About the only thing worth watching was a guy and his girlfriend try to sneak up on a couple of small bucks in the river bottom. We were sitting on a ridge watching the two bucks when we see this lady wearing a white jacket and black pants following the guy who was in all green carrying his bow. We laughed our butts off.

Yeah one things for sure if you spot a muley down there so did 5 other guys,I've heard story's of guys getting into over who shot the deer and who's taking it home,I'm out on that but like I said it's free, but free isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I never did feel comfy encountering other hunters in the bush.

Meridith is one of my favorite hunting places
Beautiful country there's lots of deer and hunters if you hunt the canyons... We DON'T hunt the canyons .. During bow season where we go is crowded cause the area is shotgun or bow only but we have taken lots of deer in this area the Area is chimney hollow.. If you go during thanksgiving weekend there's days where there's no one in that area

Yea the river bottom is really thick. We stayed on top of the canyons for the most part, glassing into the bottom and the fingers. If its not so dry up there I think the hunting would be a little better. We talked to a park ranger who said that he hadn't seen a lot of deer except on all the ranches around the area where there was water. If there is water this year in the park then there should be some deer. We didn't see but a couple of hunters the time we were up there.
