The only thing I can think of is snake boots other than that be very careful. Another is cary a stick that is approx. 5 or 6 foot long and go in a side to side motion in front of you with it. This should pretty much run them off before you get to them. If not they will hiss at the stick before you get to them.

snake boots and a stick, and my personal favorite a snake charmer wich works wonders on any snake. with young one's especially let them have a stick, and if possible keep em' out of the highgrass. i've been struck and struck at with snake boots and they hit me high on the boot up towards the knee and i'm 6'1" so a child at say 3'-4' that would not be good, but the fear of em' when i was little is probably what kept from getting bit. most of my close calls with the rattlers and such have come in residential neighborhoods were they don't have anywhere to go and you usually let your guard down at home in the suburbs.

Don't turn em loose in the high grass or let em wander aimlessly and digging in woodpiles. I've got a 6 year-old. Believe me, I know that's a chore to do. Teach them how to check these areas for snakes and constantly preach caution. I think I was just blessed considering all the junk I used to crawl through as a kid...and still do!!!

Shot a 4 footer in one of our lease tanks on Saturday. They are out for sure.

be careful...not only does the bite itself suck, as well as the time in the hospital, but when you find out insurance doesn't cover anti-venin or half of the other necessary things to keep you alive, it sucks even worse...

I saw a Texas Corral snake this past Saturday. Beautiful specimen. I did not mind him-and he did not mind me. We said our "hellos" and "good-byes" when he slithered off. This is the FIRST snake I have seen out in the place that I hunt. I wish I could see more.

Congratulations on the sighting.

I've never seen a coral snake in the wild. They are supposed to be pretty reclusive.

What part of the country did you see him?

I had a wake up call yeaterday.
I was guiding a turkey hunt yesterday and we were maneuvering on a longbeard. we were moving rather quickly to get into position. The hunter was behind me and I heard him yell "snake"! I turned around and 6 inches from my footprint was a small rattler. He had been sunning himself on an old scrape. He blended in perfectly with the dirt. You would think I would know better, but that is West Texas for you. The hunter had the snake in his sights and one word from me and that rattler would be history. I said "Leave him alone, lets go get that gobbler" which we did. I needed that little reminder, they can be anywhere anytime.

I heard one while I was out turkey hunting in Crosby County Sunday, but didn't see him or want to get any closer than 6 foot to the bush from which I heard the rattling.

I caught 2 coral snakes, and a copperhead on my place in east texas. I also caught this copperhead in louisiana a couple years back. This is the biggest copperhead I ever saw.

That is a huge copperhead. The biggest I have gotten is 28 inches and I thought that was big. Beautiful speciman too. He'd make a nice belt for someone thinner than me.

I let him go, but everyone at work wanted me to kill it. The largest ever recorded was 43 inches, and I think this one may have been longer. I didn't think about it being the largest until after I let it go. I sure wish I would have kept it, atleast to measure it. It is kind of hard to measure a live copperhead.

Copperheads are beautiful. The ones we have here are dark redish to a rust brown but they are MEAN! The most aggresive I have ever seen.

I have caught about 5 copperheads, and none of them were aggressive. The one in the pic had nicer colors than shows on the pic. I had to use a junk camera at work to take the pics. We had to provoke the one in the pic to bite a stick, we where trying to get a pic of it striking but we were way to slow. Everyone I have messed with just tried to get away. I have only caught a few rattle snakes, and didn't find them very aggressive either. The water moccasin is the only one I find aggressive.

I didn't need to see all those snakes this early in the morning!

I have no experience with rattlesnakes but I have walked up on too many watermoccasins and copperheads to be comfortable around any of them!

I didn't want to start a new thread, but wanted some input. I have seen snake boots online and they are $$$$150+... Is there a place that's have em for any cheaper?

Thanks

TxP

my opinion is that boots are good but chaps are way better.

I know they are hot and uncomfortable but they go up alot higher.
