Most of my deer hunting has been in setups where my blind/feeders are at relatively level ground. And my rifles are zeroed and I trust the shots I take and I'm very confident they will hit where I place the crosshairs. However, this past season I hunted out of a blind that was 25 feet in the air and the feeders sat approximately 10-15 feet lower than the base of the blind, one feeder is 125 yards and second is 75 yards. Two shots, two kills BUT neither of the two shots hit where I was aiming, one hit high shoulder and the deer was DRT, no complaints on that one, and the second deer hit low which required a follow up shot. Also shot two hogs from the same setup, hog 1 shot taken at the further feeder (125yds)was hit right where I was aiming and hog 2 was at a closer feeder approx 75 yards and was a direct head shot where I was aiming. Shots on the deer were approximately 125 yards, if I'm zero'ed at 100 and can repeatedly hit the bullseye, why did my point of impact change so much with the elevation change and where should I hold for these types of shots? I had a stable rest and was shooting a 150 grain Rem Core lokt .270 so recoil isn't the issue. Would like any feedback as I don't like the inconsistencies I got from the shots. Thx for any help.

POI should not change with the measurements you provided. I would venture an educated guess that there is another factor effecting the shot placement and the elevation does not have anything to do with it.

If you don't think so, take a target out to the stand and shoot.

A 40' elevation change at 125 yards only amounts to about a 2' difference in measured distance and horizontal distance.

Thats what gets me, I know it shouldn't have made a difference given the ranges. Maybe it was a case of deer fever as the shots on the hogs were right on. Guess I need to throw a target out there and see how it goes.

I agree with what TxHntr said, should not have made a difference at those distances or that height.

Yup, What they said. Must have been something else made the POI change.

setup a target and take a shot. put your hunting coat on if you can bear it. might be your position.

150 grain Rem Core lokt barf

here's your answer, that ammo sucks

but as a general rule up or down hill you aim low, but as again the 125 would make a difference but the 75 and closer would start to make a little distance the closer to the stand you get.
