I recently was given a nice 2 man kayak. It is a fishing kayak, but it Is orange. I was wondering if a kayak can be painted and does anybody even use a kayak to hunt from?

Any tips for a first time kayaker?

Painting a kayak is really, really tough. Actually it is really easy, it's keeping the paint on that's hard. If you ask kayak guys on the internet you'll find a few that say they have it figured out, if you watch them over the years you'll see them repaint pretty often.

That being said, I use my kayak to get to and from places a lot, and then I normally throw a sheet of burlap over it and hide it and hunt from natural cover.

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

I've been thinking a lot about doing the same thing this upcoming season, mainly because I've been thinking a lot about the season and need something to make the time pass. Guess that's why quite a few of us are on here; trying to get a fix while we wait for September early teal.

A buddy and I tried to use a 2-man kayak for duck hunting last season and didn't try again after our first failed attempt. There are some things I learned from the experience, so take it for what's it worth: one man's opinion/experience.

We had a sit-in style kayak that we have a camo cover for. Lesson one: Don't try to paddle any distance with the camo cover installed. It basically serves as a giant parachute to DRAG you back and makes every paddle stroke 10 times harder. Even though it seemed "form-fitting" it caused an enormous amount of drag. If you paint your kayak you'll really only need to paint the top of it because about 2/3rd will be under water.

Lesson two: Paddling any distance with two average to overweight guys in a kayak + guns + gear+ decoys means you'll be riding about a foot below sea level. Which means you might lose your gear and if there's even a 5 mph wind you'll start to take on waves. Even tiny ones. Again, I'm speaking from experience and probably admitting to being less than smart when it came to this outing.

Lesson three: Attempting to shoot out of a kayak that is barely floating a foot below sea level is a little easier than doing an Irish river dance on a floating log. Especially when you get excited and swing with the birds.

So, here's what I've learned. Sit-on top kayaks are more stable than sit-in kayaks. Don't plan on paddling too far in your kayak; use it to get short distances, sneak into great spots, but don't attempt a three-mile paddle in. Hide it on the shore and hunt from cover, don't try to hunt from the kayak floating in the water. Or you could use it as a layout blind, just make sure it's on some land or cover to give you some stability. Wear a life jacket; especially if you're also wearing waders. Don't try to take all your gear and another guy in a 2-man kayak; if you're planning to hunt alone it might be an option.

A quick web search yields some options for painting a kayak, so it can be done. Check this one out with a stencil:

Hope this helps and good luck!

Good advice ^^^.
Just put camo netting over it and hunt from the bank. Use the second seat to haul gear.

krylon fusion sticks to plastic pretty well

color selection is limited but you can put down a base of black fusion and then use regular spray paint on top of that for camo

Umm...Negative on that one.

The hull style has way more to do with stability in a yak than sit-on/sit-in. That being said, your much better off in a sit-in style kayak if the hull types are similar. Your CG is much lower in it.

Edit: I use mine all the time for hunting. Best advise I can give you is don't overload yourself with gear. Take the essientials and thats it. The distance you will be able to cover is largly based on your skill level. Meaning: Just because you may be strong doesn't mean you can go far. Take it out now and learn a proper paddle stroke and you'll be able to go much futher with less energy loss.

I have had nothing but positive experiences hunting from my 'yak!! There are a few things that must be remembered!
1. PFD!!!!!!!! wear it do not sit on it!
2. minimal gear( I never take more that 12-18 dekes tops) Do not overload 'yak!
3. Plan on making your trip to hunting area paddling into the wind. Does not always work out,but makes the trip home much more pleasant especially if the wind picks by as little a 5mph
4. EVERYTHING will get WET!!!

I hunted out of a yellow kayak for a few years before I got a boat. Trying to camoflauge it was the hardest part. In my experience the best thing to do was to cover it and then hunt down the shore from it.

Ive done it,its not to hard, but your hunting place needs to be kind of close to where your going to put in, especially if your going to be loaded down with anything. Just cover/brush it up real good and you'll be fine, if you have a comfortable seat its even better.

I use mine where applicable. It's not always useful though.

And it fishes pretty good too
