Since TxTrophy is helping us all pass the off-season I came up with one of my own:

You are hunting the Hill Country within an hour of Fredricksburg. It's November, in the afternoon, and you're settled comfortably in an elevated box blind watching about a 5 acre open area with brush on all sides. The wind is in your face. You've got your trusty .270 Win in your lap.

Right at the far tree line you spot movement, and I'll be darned if a genuine big mountain lion doesn't step out, strolling across the opening. He's about 150 yards out. You've never seen any lions on this ranch before, don't run livestock, and have never come across any deer you think were killed by a lion.

Do you take the shot or grab the camera and let him walk?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

How bad is it that huntaddict and I have had multiple lengthy conversations about what would we do if we happened upon a squatch while east tx hunting? The answer to both scenarios involve a bullet.

He'll be gone before you can figure out what it was and get your rifle up and out the window!
But, I would try to collect him if he gave me that much time!

I would definitely shoot.

Better hypothetical:

Say you took the shoot and feel like you hit a little far back. There is a good blood trail, but the sun is going down. You're alone.

You following that thing into the woods?

I wouldn't. All the dangerous critters that make this country interesting are in such short supply. I'd just count my blessings that I was lucky enough to have seen it. I have no desire to shoot a big cat.

As for me, I'd let him walk too. He's not doing any harm, and is a natural part of the ecosystem. It's the same reason I let coyotes walk certain times of the year as well.

I think it'd be cool just to see one and maybe snag a pic that would later be dismissed as a Bobcat on THF.

Dead cat walking...someone closeby is bound to have livestock, chihuahuas or don't believe they're in the area.
