Building a house in mustang creek south of fort worth. No privacy fences out there, so I'm doin a 4' split rail with mesh wire so the dogs don't get out. Plan on puttin a hotwire all around it, but still kinda worried about my pups. My lab hasn't experienced being able to see everything, and he's pretty hyper. He also isn't fixed. Our yard backs up to 1187. Any advice as to any other precautions I should take. Thought about puttin a slanted board at the top of the fence to deter from jumping over it.

Try those invisible fence things.... I've been told they work pretty dang good.

Edit: Just make sure you're not holding that collar when you walk across that line grin

Cant go with a 5'? Might consider this, whatever height they will allow, buy your fence 1' taller & bury the extra one foot so they cant dig under. I would definitely put a hot wire at the top of it.

just remember if for instance, you buy 5' fence & bury 1' of it, don't buy 5' gates, buy 4 footers.

In ground fence by PetSafe. You can get it at Tractor Supply among other places.

Train him

Although indo not have 4 foot fences
I do have have traffic in and out of the back yard with pool guys, kids etc
Could not risk one of mine escaping if the gate was left open by mistake

So we spent 4 days of heavy training on the backyard dos and donts
Today they will not walk thru the gate unless invited

The gate can be wide open with me or the wife and kids out front and they will not come thru the gate

Takes some time but it can be accomplished
Did rhe same thing with the wifes flower beds
Teach the ah not yours buddy stay out

Of course once you think you have the training complete you want to test it with getting a buddy to being his dog by etc for added distractions and to test your progress with them not crossing the fence area

What would be a pain in the a$$ would be scooping you dog off the should of 1187 because you didn't feel like putting the collar on him... Not personal experience with my own dog, but my roommate in college HAD a dog. A 45 lbs. dog weighs a lot on the end of a shovel...

Some neighbors of my wife's grandparents have an underground fence of sorts and their dogs do very well with them. I think they just leave the collars on the dogs for the most part, charge them at night. I'd have to assume that after the dog learned the boundaries of the yard, you wouldn't have to put the collar on them all the time.

I would put up an electric wire with the fence and a lock on the gate, or put in a kennel to use when your away from home.
We used the underground system once with a bloodhound. He constantly checked to make sure the system was working. If it didn't beep when he got close to the fence he knew it was off. He would be over the fence and gone. The system was electric and didn't have a battery back up. That's been years ago and they might have them with backups now.
The collar ran on a battery and would have to be changed out periodically. He got over the fence one time to many and we never found him the last time.
My dogs now are crated or kenneled if were away from home. I have a 6ft fence with 2 gates to be able to get in the back yard. The cable guy has left both of them open before.

I'm with Kindall. In addition to a lock on the gate and hot wire on the fence, I'd have kennels. Think of all the worry you can save yourself.

throwin this topic back up as I'm getting closer to moving in. Considering the invisible fence about a foot before you get to the actual fence. Not going to keep my dogs locked up in a kennel all day and not going to keep them inside during the day. Any advice would sure help. Thanks!

The invisible fence is amazing. Our friends have no fence at all and their lab has never crossed over the underground fence. It must really hurt.

Well hello neighbor, I am just a little way down the road from you. Is yours the new one with the firepalace on the back porch? I like that. Just this morning I saw a group of hogs in mustang creek, as I went over on 1187. First time I have ever seen hogs in this area!
On the dog, I have an invisible fence going to waste in the garage LMK we could work something out.

Neighbor also, used to hear yotes every night, but lately not so much. Don't like the hogs info. Where exactly did you see them? I guess I need to get the scope put on 22 so I can discourge the little buggers.

I'm just over the hill towards the west. Welcome to the neighborhood. We should all go to Chet's house for a party! I'll bring some tater salad - what do you say Chet?

Wait til it cools some and I'll grill some ribs. We can drink a cold one or two, and tell lies til we run out of steam. up

Ya! It sounds like we could get a pretty big group going.
I was east bound 1187 looking north up the creek as I went by, when I saw them day before yesterday.
