Checked all new regulations on TPWD website, and the Eastern species is the only wild turkey that you can't use a rifle to take.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/means/

The Rio Grande speceis you can use a rifle.

I just read this regulation, off their website!

Did you talk to a warden or a clerk?

I have a tendency to believe someone gave out false information, or misinterpreted the regulation, and I can't see the reasoning that a law would be changed right at the beginning of a season after all the new laws have been published and set, but I could be wrong.

Please post your sources and who you talked to and possibly provide a number to confirm.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I called Tpw 1800-792-1112 talked too a guy there that knows about the regulations and he told me you could not hunt Rios in the Spring time with a rifle! Told my Buddie that I worked with and he called also and the same was told too him. Maybe they screwed up who knows just thought I would pass it along!

This is off their website and it clearly says Eastern Turkey.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/means/

A warden would be the only one I'd trust, and not a clerk!

This is not directed at anyone in particular but when in the world did it become mandatory for people to NOT look up such things in the OUTDOOR ANNUAL that is free at most or ALL hunting/fishing license vendors?????

If people will take the time to look at page 54 of the 2007-2008 OUTDOOR ANNUAL, instead of taking Joe Blow's word for something, or take the time to go on to Texas Parks and Wildlifes website, it clearly states the ONLY EASTERN TURKEYS have to be hunted with a SHOTGUN.

Then, you can go to page 67 in that same OUTDOOR ANNUAL and get the FULL story AGAIN.

TURKEY

See County Listings for specific county regulations.

It is against the law to hunt roosting turkeys by any means at any time.

Special Requirements for Proof of Sex: see Processing Carcass in Camp.

SPECIAL REGULATIONS for Eastern Spring Season in certain East Texas counties: Shotgun, archery and crossbows only, no hunting over bait; all turkeys must be checked at a check station within 24 hours after they are killed; and harvested turkeys may be field dressed, but must otherwise remain intact. See: Turkey Check Stations

It is really important for people trying to be guides to be totally aware of these rules, along with which licenses any Non-Resident hunters you may guide have to have.

If anyone wants to get mad about this post, so be it.

Chicken Willy, my post was not directed at you, but ALL of us have a responsibility to be aware of the existing laws, whether they are a regular hunter or a guide/outfitter.

None of us need to get on here and holler something is illegal when a couple of minutes of research is going to prove us wrong.

Mis-information, whether thru ignorance of the law or because a person does not agree with it, does not need to be posted on this or any other site. JMO.

Its my bad should have checked instead of takeing someones word for it! Never really gave it much thought of hunting turkeys with a rifle, being that we only allow shotguns and bows on the ranch! Just heard it so I called, again my apollogies for posting it!

It was not anything to apologise for, I just had to rant about something that has become some what of a pernicious disease on this place, in this case it happened to be about turkey hunting.

There is someone constantly coming on here asking, "What are TP&W's Rules concerning ______________ ????????".

TP&W has an excellent website and it can be found from any of the search engines by simply typing in TP&WD and hitting search.

Also hundreds of thousands of copies of the Outdoor Annual are printed and made available statewide yearly.

We owe it to our selves as legitimate hunters, to be aware of our states Game laws as they apply to us when hunting.

We owe it to TP&W as consumers of their products, in this case hunting and fishing licenses to be aware of what those licenses do and do not allow us to do.

Lastly, any of us offering Guide/Outfitted hunts owe it to our clients and our fellow Guides/Outfitters to have accurate and current information on game laws and the licenses needed by our clients.
