i am lookig for the best load out there since i dont reload, i will be buying a couple different boxes to try and see where they stand preferably just a hunting rifle wht shoyld i look for? ttx,ttsx, btsp, sp, nosler partition any insight on this would be helpful.

I hate to say this but all ammo shoots different in each rifle. Depending on how much time and money you have, buy multiple different types and see what works.

What are you going to do with it?

If you are going to be deer hunting then I would say pretty much anythingin the 130-150 grain range will do you just fine. The only factory ammo I ever shot through mine was 130 grain core locks and 140 garin balistic tips and they both shot really well.

Buy a couple and see what you and the gun like. I personaly would stay away from the tsx as they are not needed for deer and tend to be more finicky in every gun I have shot them in then a traditional bullet, but if you do run them, get some of the 110 grain.

Most accurate factory ammo, in mine and every other gun i've ever ran them through, has been hornady Custom Ammo.

It isn't fancy, it isn't bonded, fused, boat tailed, FTX'd, zombiefied, transmogrified or anything else...

But for 30 years the green and yellow box (Remington Core Lokt 130gr) has done nothing but been consistent for me and put the animal down if I don't mess up on my part - and it can be found anyplace that sells .270 ammo. For those reasons I'll never buy anything else.

I have always like the Nosler custom ammo, if Im buying factory thats usually what I look for.

Honestly, buy a box of several different options that you are interested in, and head to the gun range. Shoot them and see how well each one does. Pick the most accurate one and go back to the same store and buy more of that ammo with the same lot number. This way you know it will shoot well. Get enough to last you as long as you plan to shoot this load.

I did what Chad said above and was happy to find the cheapest Federal loads were making clover leaves at 100 yards. They were so cheap it was not worth reloading.... A few of the others were just as good but at more than 2X the cost

Agree with what's already been said. Shoot some test groups, see what your rifle likes. Nearly all will be fine for deer-sized game. If you are going to step up to larger game I really like the 140 gr Nosler Accubonds. Terrific BC and good terminal performance.

Agree 100%. I use those exactly. Nice to know Wally World stocks them on a regular basis for a reasonable price.

I shot the Rem green/yellow box, and it was bad in my rifle. But each rifle is different.

I can tell you that many times in working up handloads until and
including the first 100 rounds loaded, I'll put around $200 into
it unless I use someone else's recipe and they work..but someone
spent the bucks getting there..The advice about getting the same
lot no. on anything you like is very sound and what we usually give at the Gun Club, however, many choose to purchase a box of
bullets and shoot their weapon in and hunt with the rest and don't understand later in season why the new shells don't hit in
the same place or they wound animals..The cheapest way to do this

Best advice you can get-Dont just shoot the same ammo, shoot the same lot as they can change from lot to lot.

For the .270win I have tested everything under the sun as well as hand loaded every load I can find and heres what I have found.


1. For big bodied deer and hogs I prefer the 140gr. bullets, you get that much more energy transfer and penetration without loosing trajectory.

2. Faster doesnt always mean better, when hand loading I found that when I backed off a full grain or ever 2 from max I got the best accuracy as well as on game performance.

My all time favorite, all around load for the .270win is
140gr. Nosler Accubond loaded with RE22/1 full gr under max.

You can get this performance from 2 different factory loads

2. Winchester loads the 140gr accubond NOTE: not to be confused with the Silver tips..do not care for them.

Runner up would be Hornady 140gr BTSP I have used both the factory loads and hand loaded these bullets for practice and huntings. They are not bonded so I have had them not penetrate at close range (inside 50yds) but everything ive shot inside 50yds with them has dropped dead.

Winchester Power Max bonded 130gr cost a little less than the Hornady 140gr BTSP, but you can get them at Wal mart and I have seen the Power max perform well also on deer and hogs.

I would buy 1 box each of
Powermax 130gr.
Hornady 140gr. BTSP
Federal 140gr. Accubond

One of these will shoot well in your gun and after you find out which shoots best you can sight in and use the other for practice.

When you find what works though, do your self a favor and
BUY A CASE OF IT! Put the boxes in a 50cal ammo can with a good seal and stick them at the back of the closet or safe.....dont be the guy that gets invited on a last minute hunting trip and has no ammo.

i agree here i have always had best of luck with Hornady custom. Also a great bullet when making your own. The A-Max i have found to be very accurate in my .308

My favorite is the Hornady 130gr sst. Shoot the factory loads for a year but now reload the sst myself. I have a savage and it shoots the sst very well factory or reloaded. When I first reloaded I varied the gr from 50 to 54 gr with 4350 and the pattern were all pretty much the same - great...... When you try a few make sure you include this one....

Well said. I have never used anything else in my .270 and could not be happier

I loaded some 130 SST's for my neighbor...he was 4 for 4 on deer this year. Very Happy. Sitting on top of 59.1 grns of H4831. Turned his rifle into a tack driver and he didn't have to chase his deer.

I kind of like the old school 130gr silvertips in the plain Jane 270. Accurate in my rifle and tends to leave some good size holes.

I have owned Ruger #1, Model 77, Remington 700, Remington 722 and they all shot the Remington Core Lokts very well in a variety of calibers. Most were in .270 130 grain. The #1 also shot the Winchester Silvertips very well. Find the load your rifle likes and stick with it. Clean your rifle on a regular basis and the accuracy will be better also.
