I am planning to put in a food plot I'm in the freer, texas area. I have an open field which has good dirt, But what is soil samples. I have no idea where to begin, and how to start the process. I just want to try to plant a couple of acres. What does it take to start a Food Plot?

I can't help you with the food plots, but my wifes family has some land in freer. I am hoping to make a hunt down there for the first time this year. They have 140 acres, and have shot some real nice deer there.

Go to your county agent's office they have the bags and instructions. Fill the bags the way they tell you and ship them off to A&M.

As far as planting, if you have good dirt, and a disk will actually turn it disk it up. If it's very hard ground something like a middle buster will get the dirt loosened up for the disc to do it's thing. Apply lime and or fertilizer according to the soil sample results, disk that in, and then sow whatever it is you are going to plant at the depth they tell you to plant it on the bag.

There are probably 99 other ways to do it that work just as well including no plow seeds etc. This is JMO and way of doing it.

DownSouthHunter here is a good place to get started on soil samples.

On starting a food plot, it is really what deerfeeder said. Soil sample, disk, lime/fertilize, disk, sow seed, disk lightly again if need be. Some seeds only need to be ran over as they do not require the need to be deep beneath the soil in order to germinate.

If you will contact the county agent or the wildlife biologist in Freer They can help with soil testing. Depending on what the ph of the soil is will determine what you can plant. If you are planting in the spring cow peas are good and affordable in the fall it is hard to go wrong with wheat or oats.
