My understanding is that, while you cannot scatter grain to bait dove, you can hunt over standing crops.

We are considering planting corn or maize around some of our tanks. This will hopefully help with the dove hunting but will no doubt also become deer and hog feed.

Problem is I have no idea what I am doing.

Any suggestions regarding what to plant (corn, maize, other)? When to plant?

Best to call your local Game Warden. The laws are some what tricky when it comes to doves.

You can plant a crop to hunt over but you are not allowed to cut hunting lanes in it. You can cut hunting lanes through natural grasses and weeds. I've not planted any myself but I would probably go with sunflowers.

Thanks for the feedback fellas.

I also figured sunflowers would be the easiest, but I am a bit worried about them just spreading like crazy and eventually taking over more ground than I want them to have.

That's exactly why I haven't planted them.

If you have goatweed in your area and want to do it on the cheap you can rake the ground now and by the time dove season opens you will have plenty of goatweed to hunt in.

Forgot to mention - this place does have cattle on it.

Does that mean that my food plot is DOA (dead on arrival) if I do not fence the entire thing?

Very well could be...fence it (really GOOD) or just disturb the ground, croton and native sunflowers will get going on their own. You can plant native sunflower in early to mid-October for the following season. Livestock don't seem to bother croton, native or Maximillion Sunflowers.

Good luck!

I see this same thread every year on here and can not believe the amount of people that are supose to be VETRAN outdoors men and still do not know the laws on Dove hunting.
I will tell you guys one more time,
You may plant ANY THING you want for DOVE and you MAY manipulate it.
You may plant ANYTHING you want for waterfowl but you may NOT manipulate.
This IS the FED. law. period, there is no if ands or buts.
If you think there is then you need to read your outdoor annul till your brain gets it or your eyes fall out. And if you still do not think it is the law you can call the feds in Dallas, and if you still do not think this is the law then you are retarded.

I knew dove ate wheat seed and that is why you act like a crappy farmer and "attempt" to cover, but I had know idea that dove ate wheat sprouts. That is a first for me.
