Try S&S precision in argyle, stick builds the best rifles. They can point you to the matches to. The closest match is in Denton it's 200 yards.

I suggest buy yourself a used rig from one of those shooters up there.

Be careful it's easy to get taken, but a whole rifle with a shot out barrel is still worth the sum of the parts. A new barrel is $500 ish so...

I started with a stole panda used I paid $1500 for it, used it hard for a couple of years got a new barrel chambered with the same dimensions and used my old barrel for fire forming.

6ppc or 6br is best for benchrest.

22's are awful hard to compete with.

Savage makes some factory rifles that are reasonable in cost, relatively speaking. You easily find them brand new for baout $1,200. It comes in some of the most popular benchrest calibers; 308win, 6mm Norma, 6.5x284.

According to them, their team members won some competition using straight up factory rifles with absolutely no modification. Seems like a a great place to start if you ask me.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

Your signature says you are in Jacksboro, There is a 500 yard range in Graham that has a monthly "fun shoot" that you should go check out.

PM me an email address and I will send you their shooting schedule.

Ive shot out there a few times with a friend that has a membership but i have a 350yd range set up in my backyard so i never got a membership of my own but i would really like to try to be competitive to some extent someday, i have a couple of rifles that by my standards are extremely accurate .5" maybe a little less but from what i hear that just wont cut it i also thought about getting some guys together on here and having a fun shoot nothing serious but think that would be fun if anyone is interested let me know

well Ihave been to 6 competitions this year so far ncluding one in Huntsvi;lle last weekend which was for the National 600 yard competition. 2 weeks before that was the 1,000 Nationals in San Angelo area. I would suggest try one out and if it is aomething you want to do thhere are always guys looking to share a ride or a room to cut down expenses once you get to know them a bit. I have done this for over 10 years and between the 10-15 guys I know from DFW area someone always offers to share a ride split the gas and thhe 50-75 dollar a night hotel. bnesides the drive down is good fellowship and story telling time and the ride back is time to evaluate, or rib the other guy for beating his butt again at the last shoot! LOL all good guys at these shoots. as far as local gunsmiths S&S is a stand up operation and Stick is a great guy with years building these awesome benchrest rifles. here I am and a couple of my rigs.

If you don't have a rifle that will shoot five-shot groups under 1/4" every time, you won't be competitive at all at NTSA (Denton). You'd probably need a 0.2" average or BETTER to become a serious competitor. The last match they shot, though, was under windy conditions and I saw a lot of groups that were in the 3/4" range. A good part of the competition is about the rifle and your loading techniques, but when conditions get tough it suddenly becomes much more about the shooter than the hardware.

Don't waste your money on a Savage to get into the sport. Find a used Stolle, Panda, or Stiller and you'll be much better off.

Night force 12-42x are the scopes, do yourself a favor save your money and don't buy ANYTHING else. They are the best if you can't see bullet holes especially when you step out to 400 yards your done.

Stole, nesika, viper for action
Jewell for trigger
Krieger for a barrel
Mcmillian for a stock

Nightforce for a scope

Harrels or Sinclair powder thrower
Redding bushing die
Wilson seater

Hart or bald eagle rest or a Sinclair
Good rear bad
2 cleaning rods
3000 bullets
200 pieces of brass
Cases for all

$5-6000 later

You addicted

I know I would be interested, probably know a few more that would be in for doing it once a month. I can get out to 700 behind the house, so that could be an option

sure wish i could put that much into it but for now im thinking its backyard redneck shooting games for this guy lol i went to a little competition in Bryson at the first of the year we shot 100yd tight group 230yd small hanging beer can 350yd beer can 130yd 1'X1' plate with a lever action it was pretty fun and they put a 2k limit on the cost of the rifle to even the playing field either way it would be fun to get some guys together and shoot even though its a max of 350yds there is plenty of ways to make it challenging and furdown that would be great brock isnt to far from where i live and i would like to shoot at greater distances sometime for sure

I personally got away from benchrest, I go to these clay pigeon shoots like in Huntsville I love watching those 2" clays explode at 400 yards!

I do it with a remington 700 in 260 rem or my 308 heavy barrel rifle I do have a nightforce 12-42 though..

I have built 2 rifles from scratch that takes 2 years to do but it's fun... And they weigh to much for close range br...

Yea, I'm not much into the bench rest as much as the tactical style matches, I like to shoot prone off of a bipod. I got into long range a few years ago and the gun I have been wanting since I started up is coming in Friday. Took a bit to do it, and it still ain't finished, but will get there in time.

I have plans to build a 100 to 700yd range behind the house

We should have a date Monday for a clay bird shoot sometime in July itll be a hour drive north several guys from Graham will be there. I'll post it in the trap sleet and target shooting section when we set the date. the rules look for spanishfort shootout just about any gun can compete S&S usually has a good showing if you want to look at some of his work.
