well here is the final product of the black rain build.
i am not able to edit my build thread to add pics to original post so i just made another thread.
after all is said and done i managed to use TWO cheap parts
but the efficiency of those two parts will be just fine for what i plan on doing with it.

i used a UTG buffer tube and UTG bipod.
the original buffer tube i used for some reason had rough interior so when the action was worked it was noisy as hell.
i found a utg buffer tube at CTD and checked the inside and was smooth as could be.

for being my first AR build i feel it was a great success!

here is the list of parts used:

BRO matching upper and lower receivers
BRO rifle length free float quad rail
BRO stainless 5/8-24 Flash suppressor
BCM VLTOR charging handle
WOA 18" stainless SPR profile 6.8spcII barrel
KNS anti rotation/walk pin kit GEN2
NIB-X Bolt carrier
CMT 6.8 bolt
CMMG detents and springs
TIMNEY 3lb skeletonized drop in trigger
MAGPUL CTR stock
MAGPUL MOE grip
UTG buffer tube
UTG bipod
ASC 6.8 magazine
BURRIS PEPR QD scope mount
VORTEX VIPER 6.5-20x44 w/sunshade

You wasted money on that scope. The round drops way too fast to need a scope with that much magnification. I never understand why people do this to guns. You'll find the WOA barrel is very accurate though. I got .2 moa using a WOA armory barrel and 2.5x8 VX3.

The 6.8 drops very quickly after 100 yards. At 200 you'll have to hold the crosshairs at the top of the target to get it on paper. I won't even bother to try any further. A scope with a minimum of 6.5 is going to be a bear to use when trying to acquire targets quickly as an AR is designed for. If you were closer I'd let you throw one of my VX3 2.5x8's on there and see how much better it is. Military snipers are issued 11x scopes. A lot of people do worse when using extremely high power scopes because the magnified movement makes them feel like they're doing something wrong so they try to compensate.

Im not trying to go into combat with this thing. LoL it was something i just felt like building. I understand your point but 100yds is all i shoot anyways. If i use it for hogs i will likely use iron sights or possibly my cheaper scope. If i actually paid retail price for this this vortex then a waste of money would be more of an opinion than a fact. I paid 250$ for it brand new. I cannot imagine how anyone would consider that a waste of money! lol

That scope works fantastic on my 20" rock river 5.56 so it was certainly not a waste of money!

Hornady BTHP ammo is the most accurate I've shot out of mine.

I fully agree with your idea of a 6.5x20 on a 6.8SPC. I love my Leupold 6.5x20x40 on mine and have taken several hogs ove 200 yds with it. In my style of hunting and shooting there is NO equal for good optics and magnification. My next build will be a MEGA monolithic 20" 6.8SPC. Here is my 16" YHM 6.8SPC.

What is your style of hunting? We both know the 6.8 isn't powerful enough but there's no reason my 8x wouldn't be scope enough for at least 800 yards shooting large game.

I guess I am another retard that likes high powered scopes on a 6.8. Vortex Viper 6.5x20x44 just like the one that started this thread. hammer

way I look at it, if I am in a huge hurry I will use iron sights. A good high power scope is nice since it takes the guess work out of where you are shooting. I prefer a higher magnification myself.

Nice rig.

An about the optics: to each his own. If you're happy, I'm happy.

It's not a light one that's for sure! I've held this beautiful rifle.

I have a vortex 4-12 on my 6.8 and absolutely love it . Personally I like a scope with at least 9x or higher

im not positive on actual weight but i know it weights as much as my 20" rock river with rifle length free float tube. im not really concerned with its weight though as im sure i can carry it anywhere it goes with me!

The ballistics charts for the 6.8SPc show a drop of 17.82 at 300yds shooting 110gr v max factory loads and a .308 shooting 150gr Federals drops 14.67 at 300yds sounds to me like he might be able to utilize that 24x scope especially if it fits his shooting style nice rifle by the way i would love to have it

I can't speak for most people but I personally use higher magnification scopes for one reason only. Spotting. Why carry extra gear around when you just flip your wrist and viola! More zoom to check out your target. I rarely shoot any game over 4-8x power.

Nice rig for your first build by the way. Run into any humps while putting it all together?

I finally got the chance to take this thing to the range today and it was everything i expected! This gun shoots as good as it looks! With the vortex viper 4-12x40 i picked up from BIL i got some really good groupings. My next trip to the range i will get it fine tuned and will update with some photos.

Now that this one is done the next project will follow soon. I have hopes of building another billet rig but this one will be side charging!
Cant wait!

Only rounds i shot were the SSA 115gr OTM i put 20rds and tanner put 10rds every round was flawless and once i got the scope setup the groups were 1/4 to 1/2 moa at 50yds and pretty close to the same at 100yds but i didnt want to blow through all the ammo i had i forgot to bring my cleaning tools for the 6.8 so i didnt get to follow through with the break in procedure for the new barrel. But i figure with quality ammo it should be ok with just a few rounds through it
