I have a Rem 700BDL in 300WinMag that's been giving me the fits lately. Got its trigger pull measured today and it is at 4.8lbs thus explaining the spread I'm getting at 4" @200yds and 3" @100yds - not acceptable. Depending on the cost I'm gonna either just lower the poundage or replace it with a Timney trigger.

This is not my primary rifle but I do like to shoot it from time to time (since I already have it) to hunt and for target shooting. For those of you that have adjusted your triggers, what poundage did you set yours to?

For a hunting rifle 2.5 to 3lbs. Can still be accurate but feel it with gloves on

i set most of mine at 2 pounds but you should only do that if you are used to shooting triggers that light it could be very dangerous for a un experienced shooter and would not recommend that light for a hunting gun

My hunting rifles are all set at 3lbs.

My 22-250 was about 2 3/4

My uncles .270 is set at 1 1/2 lbs and I think it's way too light

What ammo are you using? Basic hunting ammo won't do much better than that.

I would get a replacement and have them set it at 3-3.25 lbs to see how you like it. If you like it then you can lower it later on if you want. I like Jewell Triggers. I set mine at 2# for hunting rifles. I shoot Remington factory Corelokts and get much better groups than that at 200 yrd with my .270 and I am not the greatest shot either.

Chris, actually this has been going on for almost 2 yrs now. I reload and have tried Barnes TSX, Nosler Accubonds, and Sierra GK (all 180grs & with different powders). I've come to a conclusion that this rifle likes the GK the best. I've also used factory rounds: Win, Rem, and Federal. I'm getting similar results from lighter bullets as well, 150 & 165grs.

I shoot about 500 rounds during the off season (.243, .308, .30-06, and .300WM) and get good results from all but this rifle. At first I thought the reticles of my scope became loose and even sent it back to Nikon for repair but they didn't note any problem with it. I have a Browning, also in 300WinMag, that I get 1.5" @200yds and <1" @100yds. I don't know why I didn't question the trigger pull until today at the range when a guy next to me question it.

One rifle this year I replaced and went from a 7+lb trigger to a 3 lb trigger, groups shrank from 2" plus at 100 yards to less than 3/4 with no other change.

You should be able to adjust the trigger weight down to 3lbs without a problem. Most rifles now come from the manufacturer set heavy. The Remington M700 trigger is a good design it just needs to have the adjustment backed out a bit.

I've considered a Timney as well. I have a Winchester Model 70 .30-06 and I've always perferred a very light trigger pull, maybe 1.5-2 lbs.

The Timney, I noticed is adjustable down to 10oz. This seems insane to me, has anyone ever shot a rifle with a trigger that light?

Yes I personally like them that light. I have my riflebasix set as light as it can go.

I've shot a double set trigger where the set trigger was about 12 oz. but only at the range. The Timney trigger isn't crazy it's used on a lot of benchrest rifles where a extra light trigger has a purpose. Double set triggers are useful, the one I shot, when used as a normal single trigger had a 4lb pull. Pull the back trigger and you now had a 12oz pull for long range shooting from a solid rest.

yes, I've looked into the basix as well, according to midway the basix comes in a little less than the Timney but not enough to really matter to me. I did notice, however that the jewel triggers are significantly higher. If anyone has used a jewel, are they worth the extra scracth for some reason, or do they offer as much as a Basix or Timney?

Reason I as is that I'm thinking about a trigger job on my model 70. I understand that the basix is a direct drop in, but the Timney and the Jewel need a litte more gunsmithing. While we're on the topic, I figured I'd mention it.

All of the older Rem 700's adjust fairly easy..you have two screws...just be careful and take you time..and if in doubt go
to a gunsmith and he'll probably call it a trigger job...and charge you for it..If one of your buddies at your gun club does
it and has experience w/them it's about a 15min tops job..Don

I've shot an Anschutz with a 10 oz trigger and it would go off when you closed the bolt sometimes. A little too light IMO. 3 lbs is good for hunting.
