Some hound men around here feed every other day during thr off season. Dogs look in great condition. Never tried this feeding method. Would like your thoughts both positive and negitive for bird dogs.

I don't like it. I had to cut way back, but Cracker likes the ceremony. It's simply not an option foor me.

I wouldn't want to eat every other day so I wouldn't expect my dogs to do it. Also, if they're working dogs they need the nutrition.

I would probably look like I was in great condition too if I ate every other day...but I am not going to do it and neither is my dog

Can't help but think it would slow their metabolism way down and create other health issues.

I wouldn't do it to my dog.

I've never heard of anyone doing that. I cut their food back some in the off season but feeding once every other day is not enough.

Cutting their food in half is better than every other day, I don't see the benefit of every other day.

When my dog was on pro plan, I had to watch her weight and how much she ate, but when i switch to blue buffalo, she eats all she wants and looks much better.

I just can't see any benefits to feeding every other day.
Mine want less food over the summer.
Combine the heat will less exercise and they eat about half of what they do during the hunting season. I feed them daily but if I didn't cut the food back it would just go to waste.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.

I don't feed as much during the warmer months but I still feed in the morning and at night. I think it keeps their metabolism up and they don't act lazy after they get done eating.

Guy, I like Blue Buffalo too. It's a good product and the dogs do well on it. It seems their bodies use more of it up with less waste.

I agree with Guy in that you simply cut way back on the amount you feed in the summer as compared to the winter. I hunt my dogs 4-5 mornings a week and feed my 45-55 pound dogs less than two cups each of Black Gold Performance Blend 26-18. My dogs are never overweight and easy cleanup in kennels. I pay $32/50# sack which is much cheaper than other premium dog foods.
Adios,
Gary

Gary, who distributes Black Gold Performance?

No sir ! My thoughts are if I can feed my face my dogs are eating.
If I fed my dogs every other day. I would have to do that and I don't know if I could do that ! Lol. The dogs always eat before I do

I get Black Gold here in Menard at Compton Warehouse. Goggle Black Gold Dog Food and I think there is a way to find a dealer in your area. I will see what I can find.

There are several lines of thought on feeding hunting dogs..one
may change foods to a reduced protein/fat content..reduce amts
ect..also if in doubt about any in your kennel, withhold feed one
day prior to worming and see if any look sick...We used to keep
about 25 or more hounds and if one was sick it would show up the
one time I withheld feed..You probably wouldn't hurt the animal
feeding every other day, providing you fed enough to fill him up
and it was good feed..but I'd not try that..Older dogs that put on wgt. I'd reduce and change their diets in the heat..Don

You might look at a lower calorie food for off season.

Have a friend that uses non calorie filler during the off season.

I am in agreement with everyone - I don't think I would want to only eat every other day, so wouldn't wany my dogs to do that either.

I spoke in length to a Blue Buffalo rep when I got my puppy and their recommendation is to definately feed by the recommended amount, and to use the normal Chicken & Rice formula for off-season, and then switch to the Wilderness during season (higher protein and fat).

This is how I fed my GSP. He would get cut up like a prize fighter during the season on the Wilderness, then I'd switch him to the Blue Buffalo that had glucosimine for the off season.

However, I switched, mainly because of cost. That wilderness is pricey.

When you switch them from the wilderness to the other, do you still have to introduce it slowly or is it close enough for their system to handle it without the runs?

I would always introduce it slowly. Odd thing about wilderness is that it always made my dogs poop runny. I'd of thought that it would be solid due to the high protein. Might have just been my dog though.
